Its collection foregrounds left politics and social history, while neighbouring Studio Safdar brings theatre and other cultural programming into the same setting. Those features—not an unverified claim that it is the city’s only or “most” distinctive bookshop—explain what sets it apart.
What is May Day Bookstore?
May Day Bookstore is a politically focused bookshop in Shadi Khampur, west Delhi. LeftWord Books describes itself as a New Delhi-based publisher of critical and analytical writing, with particular attention to Marxist theory, and says it runs and manages the store. LeftWord was set up in 1999; the bookstore itself launched on 1 May 2012, according to the Independent Bookshops Association of India. The name and launch date refer to May Day, or International Workers’ Day. LeftWord Books; Independent Bookshops Association of India; Scroll, 1 May 2015.

What can readers find in the shop?
The Independent Bookshops Association of India lists left politics, history, social science, gender studies, theatre, film and fiction among the store’s genres. It reports books in English and Hindi, including many from independent publishers. Scroll’s 2015 profile also described titles spanning left-wing writing, children’s books, gender and caste politics, and history. The mix makes the shop relevant not just to readers seeking political theory, but also to those exploring social history, cultural work and fiction through a broader critical lens.
How the bookstore connects to Studio Safdar
Studio Safdar is next door to the bookstore. LeftWord identifies it as an adjacent theatre space; Scroll connects it to Jana Natya Manch, the performance group, and describes the bookshop and theatre as complementary parts of the venue. The bookstore directory reports monthly performances, readings, discussions and film screenings. Together, the spaces bring bookselling into proximity with performance and public conversation, rather than treating the shop only as a place to browse and buy books. Descriptions of the café reflect different periods rather than a confirmed current offer. A 2022 Center for Civil Society case study describes tea, coffee and biscuits on a pay-what-you-want basis at the time it examined the space. A 2020 Scroll report says café operations were limited to special occasions, including May Day. Because these accounts differ and are dated, they do not establish whether the café currently serves visitors, what it offers, or what it costs. Center for Civil Society, 2022 case study; Scroll.
