Forbes estimated George Lucas’s net worth at $5.3 billion as of September 16, 2026. That is Forbes’s dated estimate—not an audited account of Lucas’s finances. The widely cited $4.05 billion Disney-Lucasfilm deal from 2012 was a transaction valuation, not his present-day net worth.

Why the Disney deal is often mistaken for his net worth
When Disney announced its acquisition of Lucasfilm on October 30, 2012, it valued the transaction at $4.05 billion, based on Disney’s October 26 closing share price. Lucasfilm was then 100% owned by its founder and chairman, George Lucas. Disney said the consideration would consist of approximately half cash and approximately 40 million Disney shares at closing. The $4.05 billion figure describes the deal’s value at that time; it does not say how much Lucas received as cash, nor how much wealth he has today. A current net-worth estimate is a different measure: it may reflect subsequent investment performance and other assets, alongside taxes, charitable gifts, spending, and liabilities. The public sources cited here do not provide a complete accounting that reconciles those factors.

What is known about Lucas’s charitable giving?
In 2012, a Lucas spokesperson told Vanity Fair that Lucas planned to donate the majority of the sale proceeds to philanthropic endeavors. That was a statement of intent, not a full accounting of how much was ultimately donated or what remains of the proceeds. Vanity Fair’s 2012 report
A 2025 Institute for Policy Studies report estimated that Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, had given $3.6 billion to charity since signing the Giving Pledge. The estimate covers the couple together and cumulative giving over time. It should not be treated as Lucas’s individual net worth or subtracted mechanically from the 2012 transaction value. Figures reported about Lucas can refer to different things, so they are not interchangeable:
- $5.3 billion: Forbes’s estimate of Lucas’s net worth as of September 16, 2026.
- $4.05 billion: Disney’s 2012 valuation of its Lucasfilm acquisition, with consideration in cash and stock.
- $3.6 billion: the Institute for Policy Studies’ 2025 estimate of charitable giving by Lucas and Hobson together since signing the Giving Pledge.
When comparing net-worth estimates from different outlets, check the publication, estimate date, and what the number measures. A transaction valuation and a cumulative charitable-giving estimate do not establish an individual’s current wealth.
