Reports identified Philip Vaughn as the man photographed with Melinda French Gates in 2024. Vaughn is a Seattle-area technology veteran who worked at Microsoft and later founded craft-beer delivery app Tavour. French Gates has spoken publicly about being happy in a relationship, but in the cited remarks she did not name Vaughn; the latest dated public appearance in the sources reviewed was in October 2025.
Who is Philip Vaughn?
Philip Vaughn is an entrepreneur whose career has included technology work and several startup roles in the Seattle area. GeekWire identified him as French Gates’s reported boyfriend after the pair were photographed holding hands in New York in October 2024. That identification rests on press reporting and public appearances, rather than a cited statement from either person confirming the relationship by name.
What did Vaughn do at Microsoft?
GeekWire reported that Vaughn worked at Microsoft as a program manager for more than eight years and left in 2008. HOLA later attributed the dates 1999–2008 to Vaughn’s LinkedIn profile. Those are profile-reported dates, not independently verified employment records.
What is Tavour, and what was Vaughn’s role?
Vaughn founded Tavour, a Seattle-based craft beer delivery app, in 2013, according to GeekWire. The publication described him as the company’s chairman in October 2024; HOLA also called him its founder and chairman in April 2025. Those reports establish his role at those times, not whether he still holds the title today.

What has Melinda French Gates said?
In 2025, French Gates described her relationship as “pretty great” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and told People she was “very, very happy,” according to HOLA. HOLA explicitly noted that she did not name Vaughn in those remarks. They show that she spoke positively about being in a relationship, but they are not a direct, named confirmation that Vaughn was the person she meant.
