Rooney’s eight surviving children and his estranged wife, Jan Rooney, were excluded. The reported probate figure is not a measure of Rooney’s lifetime earnings or necessarily every asset arrangement.
Who did Mickey Rooney’s will name?
Rooney signed the will on March 11, 2014, a few weeks before his death. It was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Contemporary reports said the beneficiaries were his stepson Mark Rooney and Mark’s wife.
The will included the sentence, reproduced by Inside Edition in its April 9, 2014 report: “I have intentionally omitted from this will any provision for any of my heirs.”
Were his children and wife disinherited?
Reports on the will said Rooney excluded his eight surviving children and his estranged wife, Jan Rooney. His attorney attributed the decision to Rooney’s belief that his children were in better financial circumstances than he was. That is the attorney’s reported explanation, not an independently established account of Rooney’s motive.

What did the $18,000 figure mean?
The $18,000 figure was the estate estimate in the initial court filing, as reported by The Guardian, Sky News, CityNews/AP and Inside Edition in 2014. It describes the reported probate estate estimate; it should not be treated as Rooney’s total lifetime net worth or as a definitive accounting of every asset or arrangement.
Why is the $2.8 million figure different?
TIME reported in 2014 that, in an earlier lawsuit, Rooney’s stepson agreed he owed Rooney $2.8 million. That figure belongs to the lawsuit context. It is not the amount inherited under the will, the reported cash left at Rooney’s death, or proof that the estate ultimately collected the debt.

Did Jan Rooney’s probate challenge change the will?
Jan Rooney reportedly filed a probate challenge in May 2014. The reporting available here establishes that a challenge was filed, but not its final disposition; it therefore does not establish whether the challenge succeeded or failed.
