How Rooker joined the series
Rooker said the part came as a surprise while he was filming The Righteous Gemstones in South Carolina. He was nearby when the production needed him, and his response was, “Yeah, let’s do it.”
The character’s look had already been sketched out. Rooker wore a wig with beads and feathers, describing Red’s feel as “Willie Nelson and Mountain Man, or something like that.” Those details give the character a deliberately outsized, backwoods hunter appearance.

Spoilers: what happens in “Back to Suture”
Major Episode 5 spoilers follow.
Red lays traps for Eagly, but the hunter-prey setup takes a turn when Eagly is revealed as “the Prime Eagle.” Rather than simply becoming Red’s quarry, Eagly is presented with near-mythic grandeur, then joins other birds in attacking him.
The humor comes from the collision between Red’s theatrical confidence as an eagle hunter and the episode’s absurd bird mythology. The human antagonist arrives prepared to hunt; the payoff makes him the target of a flock.
