Michael McKean returns as David St. Hubbins in Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, a sequel built around the estranged bandmates reuniting for one final concert. In a September 2025 interview, McKean described how the project took shape and why, in his view, David needed no updating.
What Michael McKean said about returning as David
Asked how he approached the character again, McKean told PRS Guitars on September 10, 2025: “David St. Hubbins lives squarely in the past, so he needs no updating (according to him, anyway). For some people, the flowers and the unicorns never fade away…”

It is a joke about David’s outlook, not a claim that McKean sees himself that way. The line also points to the sequel’s comic premise: the band is older and facing a last-concert scenario, but David remains attached to the sensibility that made him David.
How the sequel came together
McKean said the group had obtained the rights to the original film and initially thought they might “do something fun.” The idea eventually became “a new film focusing on a one-off concert in New Orleans,” he told PRS Guitars. His account describes the project’s development from the performers’ perspective; the studio’s synopsis supplies the story setup.

What the film is about
Sony Pictures Canada describes David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls as estranged bandmates reuniting for one final concert. Rob Reiner returns as documentary filmmaker Marty DiBergi, with the reunion framed by the band’s past, mortality, and its hope of returning to rock’s pantheon.
Prime Video’s listing adds that DiBergi follows the musicians as they search for a drummer and prepare for the New Orleans concert. The listing gives the film’s runtime as 1 hour 23 minutes.
Cast and companion album
Sony lists McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer among the cast, alongside Fran Drescher, Paul Shaffer, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Questlove, and Chris Addison. McKean also spoke about his work across music and acting, saying, “I’ve always done both since I was 14 or so; music has helped make ends meet when the acting gigs came slowly, and vice versa.” That is his own account of balancing the two pursuits.
The companion album, also titled The End Continues, was scheduled to arrive with the film on September 12, 2025, according to the PRS interview. The Associated Press noted the album’s release coincided with the sequel and described the band’s songwriting and playing as musically accomplished within the comedy’s premise; that is the AP reviewer’s assessment, not a neutral consensus.

Release and viewing options
The film and album were announced for September 12, 2025. A later About Amazon viewing guide listed September 30, 2025 as the scheduled Prime Video date in the US and gave historical store prices of $19.99 to rent and $24.99 to buy. Those were dated figures, not current offers; the guide said a Prime membership was not required for store rentals or purchases.
Prime Video’s availability is regional and can change. Its listing showed one version as unavailable while another was available to rent or buy, so check the current page in your location rather than assuming the same option is offered everywhere. Blu-ray.com reported Blu-ray and 4K UHD releases, but current stock and edition-specific extras are not established here.
