Mickey 17 is worth watching if you enjoy oddball science fiction that swings between broad comedy and pointed social critique—and can tolerate a story whose moods do not always fit neatly together. Robert Pattinson makes its central conceit lively, but the film’s 137-minute journey is more consistently inventive than tightly focused.
What is Mickey 17 about?
Mickey Barnes is an “expendable”: a worker sent into dangerous situations on an ice-world colonization mission. When he dies, his employer can produce a new version of him, leaving Mickey to face the prospect of repeated death as part of the job. That premise supplies the film’s central science-fiction hook without needing to know the turns that follow.
Written and directed by Bong Joon Ho, the film adapts Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey 7. Its official synopsis frames Mickey as an unlikely hero whose employer requires him “to die, for a living.” The story uses that setup for comedy, drama, and a critique of who holds power over workers and whose lives are treated as replaceable. Warner Bros.’ official film site identifies the source novel and principal cast.
Does Robert Pattinson make the multiple Mickeys work?
Pattinson’s performance is the film’s most direct source of comic energy. The idea of multiple versions of one character could easily remain a clever premise; the appeal here is watching Pattinson give Mickey a distinct, awkward presence amid the film’s increasingly strange circumstances. The joke is not just that there are more Pattinsons, but that the story keeps returning to the human cost of treating a person as replaceable.

He is joined by Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. The ensemble helps give the colonizing mission a wider social world, while Pattinson remains the anchor as the film jumps between farce and more serious questions.
Is Mickey 17 funny, and does its satire land?
It is deliberately goofy: its science-fiction spectacle is paired with broad jokes and an openly political edge. The satire is clearest in the expendable premise, which turns workplace disposability into something literal. The film’s oddness is a feature, not a promise of consistent gag density; comedy shares space with drama and social critique.

Whether those elements cohere is the main point of disagreement in the critical response. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes “daffy sci-fi” and “withering social critique,” while individual reviews there argue that the film’s ambitious storylines do not have room to flourish or that its tonal elements fail to gel. Those are competing reactions, not a settled verdict. If you like politically pointed science fiction that takes big tonal swings, the mix may be part of the pleasure; if you want a satire that develops one argument with precision, its shifts may feel distracting.
Does the story justify its 137-minute runtime?
Mickey 17 runs 2 hours and 17 minutes. Its imaginative premise and shifting modes give it room to build a distinctive world, but they also put pressure on momentum: the film moves among comedy, spectacle, and serious critique rather than narrowing toward one register. The question is less whether the premise is engaging than whether the changes in tone and focus pay off for you over the full runtime.

Reception reflects that split. On October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 77% Tomatometer from 363 reviews and a 73% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 verified ratings. These are changeable aggregator scores, not measures of artistic quality; the more useful clue is the range of reactions to the film’s sprawl and tonal cohesion.
Is Mickey 17 based on a book?
Yes. Bong Joon Ho’s film is based on Edward Ashton’s science-fiction novel Mickey 7. The differing titles are intentional: the movie is called Mickey 17, while the source novel is Mickey 7. Reading the book is a natural next step if you want to compare how the adaptation handles its premise and choices.
