The two acted together in the 1983 comedy Mr. Mom. Keaton’s remembrance pointed readers back to Garr’s comedic work, while also underscoring the affection colleagues felt for her away from the screen.
Garr’s connection to Mel Brooks and Young Frankenstein
Brooks directed Garr as Inga, the German lab assistant, in Young Frankenstein (1974). The Associated Press reported that Garr won the part after demonstrating a German accent. Its account includes Garr recalling how she learned it: “Cher had this German woman, Renata, making wigs, so I got the accent from her.” That is Garr’s recollection of the casting story, not a statement by Brooks.

Other colleagues also spoke about Garr’s range and character. The Los Angeles Times quoted actor Marilu Henner: “I was in awe of her dramatic chops, her comedy ease, and her very big heart,” Henner said. “Any time I saw her, no matter the struggles, she was always a blast.”

Garr’s career extended well beyond Young Frankenstein and Mr. Mom. She earned an Academy Award nomination for Tootsie and appeared across comic and dramatic roles in film and television, including the original Star Trek episode “Assignment: Earth.” The Associated Press and Reuters’ obituary coverage place her among performers whose screen presence could move easily between offbeat comedy and more grounded work.
