Meshel Laurie praised Triple M and its parent company, Southern Cross Austereo, after they parted ways with presenter Marty Sheargold in February 2025. In a public Instagram post reported by PerthNow, Laurie described the decision as significant and called Sheargold’s attitude toward women “toxic.” She also linked the news to her own past experience raising concerns about male colleagues, a history she described but that the reports reviewed here do not independently verify.
What Meshel Laurie said about Marty Sheargold
PerthNow reported on 26 February 2025 that Laurie congratulated Triple M and Southern Cross Austereo for ending their relationship with Sheargold. She said she hoped the move signalled that the radio industry was changing, asking: “Is it possible the industry is actually changing?”
Laurie also urged women in radio to keep pushing for change. She said she had previously raised concerns with radio bosses about men she worked with, and that she had become unemployable while those colleagues received warnings and stayed employed. Those claims about her career and workplace history are Laurie’s account as reported by PerthNow, not independently established findings.
Why Laurie’s reaction was personal
Laurie’s response framed Triple M’s decision against her own earlier experience in radio. She presented it as a potentially meaningful change in how the industry responds when women raise concerns about colleagues. The available reports do not establish further details about the concerns she raised or independently confirm the consequences she said followed.

How Laurie and Sheargold had worked together
Laurie and Sheargold had co-hosted Nova’s Brisbane breakfast program Meshel, Tim and Marty with Tim Blackwell. PerthNow reported that Laurie left the show in 2013, after four years.
What led Triple M and Sheargold to part ways
The immediate controversy followed Sheargold’s remarks about the Matildas after the team’s February 2025 SheBelieves Cup matches. PerthNow reported that he compared the players to “year 10 girls” and made a crude comment about preferring injury to watching their upcoming Asian Cup campaign. He apologised, and he and Triple M then mutually agreed to part ways.

ABC’s transcript of reactions the following day included responses from Matildas figures and other public voices. It also reported a separate comment in which Sheargold called endometriosis “made up.” That remark was reported separately from the comments about the Matildas and should not be conflated with the specific controversy that prompted the departure.

In September 2025, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) found that Triple M breached the Commercial Radio Code of Practice by allowing derogatory language and sexist themes to be broadcast. ABC reported that ACMA said the comments showed “a level of contempt and disdain for women’s sport, and more generally of women.” ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood said the comments “don’t belong in Australian broadcasting.”
