Fox says he reached out to Eric Stoltz about four decades after Stoltz was replaced as Marty McFly in Back to the Future. In an account from Fox’s memoir reported by RTL/ANP, Stoltz declined to contribute to the book but agreed to talk. Fox described their conversation as friendly and said they realized they had no negative feelings toward one another.
What did Fox say happened?
Fox wrote that Stoltz had kept silent about the recasting for 40 years. While working on his memoir, Fox sent Stoltz a letter. According to Fox’s account, Stoltz did not want to contribute to the book but was open to a conversation. Fox said they spoke positively about their careers, families and lives, and quickly recognized that they had no hard feelings toward each other. RTL/ANP’s report of Fox’s memoir is the source for these details; they are Fox’s account, not a first-person statement from Stoltz.
The published report does not establish when or where the conversation took place, or whether it was in person. It also does not reproduce the letter or provide Stoltz’s own account.
Why were Stoltz and Fox linked to the same role?
Stoltz was initially cast as Marty McFly and played the role for several weeks before Fox took over, according to the Associated Press. Fox described joining the production abruptly, without rehearsal. The AP’s 2025 report recounts the casting change and Fox’s comments about entering the film.

Back to the Future opened on July 3, 1985. In the film, Marty is accidentally sent from 1985 to 1955 in Doc Brown’s DeLorean and must make sure his teenage parents fall in love. Universal’s anniversary announcement gives the release date and summarizes the story.

The report describes a personal conversation initiated by Fox, not a public joint statement or a detailed account from both actors. Fox’s description suggests the old casting decision had not left them as enemies or rivals; it does not establish what Stoltz privately thought about the recasting or how he would describe their exchange.
