Shortly before her death, Melbourne writer and mother Nicole Cooper wrote that cancer was not what she wanted to “sign out on.” In wording reproduced by PerthNow from her Instagram post, she instead pointed to what she had built with her family. Cooper died on 10 January 2023, aged 38, after living with metastatic bowel cancer for six years, according to news reports.
What did Nicole Cooper write in her final Instagram post?
PerthNow reproduced Cooper’s words as: “When it comes to wrapping up, cancer is not the thing I want to sign out on.” The report said the message appeared with images of Cooper with family and friends. 7NEWS reported that her family posted a message she had written shortly before she died. The original Instagram post was not directly available in the reporting reviewed here, so the quotation is best understood as wording reproduced by those outlets.
The sentiment was not that cancer had been absent from her life; Cooper had written extensively about it. Rather, the reported final message resisted letting the disease stand in for her whole story, foregrounding family and the life they had made together.
When did Nicole Cooper die, and when was she diagnosed?
News reports say Cooper died on 10 January 2023, aged 38. They describe her as having lived with cancer for six years after a diagnosis in 2017. PerthNow and 7NEWS name her partner, Tim, and son, Joshua, among her survivors.

There is a small discrepancy in reports of her age at diagnosis: Cooper wrote in a June 2017 post that she was 32, while 7NEWS reported that she was 33 when diagnosed. The available accounts do not resolve the difference; the consistent point is that she received the diagnosis in 2017.

In her own June 2017 writing, Cooper said she was 32, caring for an eight-month-old baby, and experiencing rapid weight loss and unusual fatigue before learning she had metastatic bowel cancer. She described the experience as frightening and disorienting. “I didn’t feel right, and I trusted my instincts on this,” she wrote. That is her account of her own decision to seek medical answers, not a diagnostic rule or a substitute for medical advice.

Treatment, in her own words
Cooper’s first-person accounts described chemotherapy and surgeries as part of her treatment. Those details belong to her individual experience; they should not be read as guidance about what another person with bowel cancer should expect or choose.

Cooper was a Melbourne writer, mother and podcaster. Her public writing made room for the realities of cancer while also recording the relationships and ordinary life surrounding it. In a 2020 essay, she explained that sharing her experience was intended to help her and others find connection, rather than leave people to face illness alone.

Her advocacy also included The Impatient podcast. 7NEWS reported that Australian media personality Rebecca Judd paid tribute to Cooper on Instagram after her death. Together, these accounts show a public voice that extended beyond describing treatment: Cooper used writing and conversation to connect people around an experience she knew firsthand.
