In March 2025, reports said NYPD Detective Melissa Mercado was taken off active Special Victims cases while the department reviewed her appearance in rapper S-Quire’s music video “Doin That.” The Daily News later reported that she was reassigned from the Bronx Special Victims Squad to the 50th Precinct, effective March 14. Those reports do not establish that the NYPD found a rule violation, imposed discipline, or what Mercado’s current assignment is.
What prompted the NYPD review?
March 2025 reports identified Mercado’s appearance in “Doin That,” a video by rapper S-Quire, as the reason her conduct came under review. The coverage described her wearing revealing clubwear and performing in the video. It does not establish that she worked as a stripper; that label in some headlines is not evidence of her occupation. TMZ reported the video appearance on March 9, 2025, and Police Magazine covered the review the following day.
The reports did not establish whether Mercado sought or received approval for outside work, or whether any particular NYPD rule was broken. TMZ said officials needed to determine whether off-duty paperwork had been filed; that was a question reportedly being examined, not proof that paperwork was missing.

The Daily News report is available via Yahoo. The transfer should be understood as a March 2025 report, not as confirmation of Mercado’s current assignment.
Was Mercado found to have broken a rule?
The cited reports do not establish a final disciplinary determination, a specific policy violation, or a penalty. “Under review” describes an inquiry, not a finding. Without a reported final determination, the video appearance and reassignment alone do not show why the NYPD made its personnel decisions.

The NYPD’s officer-profile FAQ says active investigations are not listed in officer profiles and are withheld until a final determination. As a result, a missing profile entry cannot show that an inquiry has ended or reveal its outcome.

The NYPD says detectives conduct specialized investigations and examine evidence to help apprehend suspects and build cases. That is general context about detective work, not confirmation of Mercado’s precise duties or an explanation of the department’s decision in her case.
