Lethal Weapon 5 has a completed screenplay, according to Mel Gibson, but that does not mean the film is moving into production. In an interview with Collider at Fan Expo Boston, reported by Variety on August 13, 2026, Gibson said the project remains stuck. The report does not confirm a studio greenlight, filming date or release date.
What is the latest update on Lethal Weapon 5?
Gibson said he and screenwriter Richard Wenk completed a screenplay for the fifth film. He also described the project as difficult to get made, calling it “tied up in some kind of industrial film hell that you can’t extract it from to make it.” That is Gibson’s characterization, not a formal status given by the studio or rights holder.
Variety’s report does not identify a specific reason for the delay. It also does not confirm that the film has been greenlit or begun filming, or that a release date has been set. Those milestones should not be inferred from the existence of a script.
What did Gibson say about the script?
Gibson said he and Wenk approached the screenplay with the late original director Richard Donner’s sensibility in mind. Donner died in July 2021. As Variety quoted Gibson: “So I got together with the writer, and we completed it thinking, ‘What would Donner do?’ That’s what we were thinking in the room, and I think that the fifth script is better than all of the others.”

The claim that the script is better than its predecessors is Gibson’s personal assessment, not an independent evaluation of the screenplay or a guarantee that it will be produced.
Is Lethal Weapon 5 still happening?
The clearest answer is that Gibson says a screenplay is complete, while the project remains stalled. The update offers no confirmed production start or release timing, so it does not support saying that the film is imminent. Nor does it establish that the movie has been cancelled.
