Meghan Markle’s reported family connection to Dodgers star Mookie Betts resurfaced when she and Prince Harry attended Game 4 of the 2025 World Series at Dodger Stadium on October 28. The connection, first reported by The Boston Globe in 2018, is distant—not evidence that Markle and Betts are close relatives. The Globe attributed the genealogy to amateur genealogist Jim McNiff.
Who is the Dodgers player connected to Meghan Markle?
The player named in coverage of the World Series outing was Mookie Betts. A contemporary Yahoo News report described him as a Dodgers shortstop; in this historical account, he is best identified as Dodgers star Mookie Betts rather than by a role that could change. The couple attended Game 4 of the Dodgers–Toronto Blue Jays series at Dodger Stadium wearing Dodgers hats, according to Yahoo News’s October 29, 2025 report.
What is the reported family connection?
The Boston Globe reported that amateur genealogist Jim McNiff traced a distant link between Markle and Betts to ancestors in Alabama about 150 years earlier. The paper also described a separate connection through a 1920 marriage between Betts’s great uncle and Markle’s great-great aunt. These are two distinct reported links, not a basis for calling them close cousins.
The account is journalism attributed to McNiff, not an independent verification of the underlying vital records. The Boston Globe’s June 29, 2019 article recounts the genealogy and the earlier story. A later Yahoo report supplies additional proposed ancestor and census details, but those specifics remain that outlet’s reporting rather than independently established facts.

Had Markle and Betts met before the 2025 Dodgers game?
Yes. The Globe reported that they met in London on June 29, 2019, before a Red Sox–Yankees game, after the family-connection story had drawn attention. Betts told Globe staff writer Peter Abraham, “I didn’t know she was coming. I knew [Prince Harry] was coming.” He also recalled, “I told her about the story and she laughed and gave me a hug. She didn’t know about it. They probably didn’t believe it.”

The available coverage establishes that they attended Game 4 at Dodger Stadium; it does not establish a specific reason for the visit. Yahoo reported that during a stadium tour Markle showed the audience Betts’s Gold Glove award. That detail connected the outing to Betts, but it does not by itself explain the couple’s motivation for attending.
