There is no sourced official ranking of the show’s costumes, so these moments stand out for what they reveal about Rachel’s style, character, and the clothes’ life beyond the series.
Rachel Zane’s signature: tailored separates with a feminine twist
Meghan Markle described Rachel’s style as “Classic with a modern twist.” Two combinations she singled out show how that formula worked: a Tom Ford skirt with a lace-cutout Nina Ricci sweater, and a Roland Mouret pencil skirt with a Prada button-down shirt. The structured skirts give the outfits a professional silhouette; the contrasting tops keep them from reading as a uniform.
Markle said she and costume designer Jolie Andreatta worked to make Rachel’s wardrobe believable as a young working woman’s closet, even when it included standout designer pieces. Markle described mixing and matching those pieces rather than treating every look as a head-to-toe designer statement. Marie Claire’s 2013 interview with Markle gives that collaborative approach a useful context.
Tonal gray and nude: a quiet kind of polish
Markle said she favored tonal dressing and that Rachel’s wardrobe translated the idea into full gray silhouettes and variations on nude tones. The effect is restrained and timeless: rather than relying on a bold print, an outfit makes its impression through its shape, texture, and carefully coordinated color. This was a styling approach, not a rule followed by every Rachel outfit.
#1 Best Overall
That combination of tailoring and subtle variation is one of the clearest ways to recognize the character’s look. Markle’s examples and comments on the palette appear in Vogue India’s 2015 interview.
Color as a clue to Rachel’s mood
Markle later described Rachel’s clothing as a way to reflect how she felt. In her account, blush and cream appeared when Rachel was happier in a relationship; darker slate and black conveyed stress. Markle also recalled Rachel wearing more black early on, when she wanted to be taken seriously. Read this way, the wardrobe’s color shifts offer a character-storytelling lens—not a fixed color code that viewers should apply to every scene.

The distinction matters: Rachel’s workwear could communicate more than professionalism. Costume designer Jolie Andreatta said she chose outfits according to a character’s mood and interactions, then shaped an editorial look for the show. That process helps explain why the costumes feel more composed than everyday officewear. See Vogue’s 2017 interview with Andreatta and Markle’s later recollection of Rachel’s color palette.
The cognac McQueen stilettos Markle remembered
Asked about the coolest shoes in the Suits set wardrobe, Markle named her cognac-hued McQueen pointed-toe stilettos. The detail fits Rachel’s polished wardrobe: a pointed toe reinforces a sharp, tailored silhouette, while the warm cognac tone adds color without overpowering it. The interview does not identify the exact shoe model or the episode in which it appeared, so it is best remembered as Markle’s standout footwear pick rather than a precisely traceable on-screen look.

The burgundy Burberry gown that crossed from set to event
One of Rachel’s most distinctive documented evening looks has a life beyond the series. A Marie Claire retrospective reports that Rachel wore a burgundy Burberry Prorsum gown in season five, and that Markle wore the same dress to the Isabella Blow Foundation’s Fashion Blows event in Toronto in October 2014. That crossover makes the gown a particularly striking fashion moment: the costume was not just associated with Rachel on screen, but was also worn by Markle at a real-world event. The retrospective does not specify the episode.
Marie Claire’s 2025 retrospective of Markle’s evening gowns documents the connection.
What makes these looks stand out
These moments are strongest when considered through three lenses: the tailored silhouette that defines Rachel’s workwear, the use of color to suggest mood, and the unusually clear fashion history of the burgundy gown. The McQueen shoes add a memorable accessory detail, while Markle’s descriptions of the designer separates show how Rachel’s polished wardrobe balanced aspiration with mix-and-match wearability.
