Yasuke was a real African figure who served Oda Nobunaga in Japan, but the surviving record covers only a short period of his life. In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft turns him into a playable samurai protagonist; whether the historical Yasuke should be called a samurai remains debated. The game is historical fiction, not a documentary account.
What is known about the real Yasuke?
Ubisoft describes Yasuke as a real historical figure of African origin who served Oda Nobunaga, the powerful Japanese warlord. The documentary trail is brief: historian Thomas Lockley’s academic article identifies European and Japanese writings that provide testimony about Yasuke in Japan from 1579 to 1582, and describes him as an elusive figure. Lockley’s article, “The Story of Yasuke: Nobunaga’s African Retainer”, also emphasizes the limits of what can be reconstructed, including uncertainty about Yasuke’s original name.
That short span is the boundary of what the cited written evidence can support. Details about Yasuke’s early life, the route by which he came to Japan, and what happened after 1582 are not established by the record discussed here. Filling those gaps with confident biographical detail would turn possibility into fact.
Was Yasuke a samurai?
The most careful answer is that it depends on whether you mean Ubisoft’s character or the historical figure. Assassin’s Creed Shadows depicts Yasuke as a samurai. Ubisoft has also acknowledged that applying that designation to the historical Yasuke is debated.

Lockley’s article says that a 1582 mention in the Diary of Matsudaira Ietada is the first record indicating samurai status for a non-Japanese person. That is the article’s characterization of a specific written record, not proof that every aspect of Yasuke’s rank or formal title is settled. The surviving evidence supports a connection to Nobunaga; it does not eliminate the debate over exactly how to label Yasuke’s status.
How does Assassin’s Creed Shadows portray him?
Ubisoft presents Yasuke and Naoe as the game’s two protagonists, with contrasting perspectives and styles of play. Its character description frames Yasuke as combat-oriented, while Naoe’s shinobi approach emphasizes stealth. Those traits and the game’s story belong to Ubisoft’s fictional portrayal; they are not evidence about how the historical Yasuke behaved.

Ubisoft says the series is fiction inspired by historical events and figures rather than a factual representation. The company also says it consulted historians, researchers, and cultural consultants, while describing Yasuke’s representation as an example of creative license. Consultation can inform a fictional setting, but it does not make the resulting scenes or characterization historical records. Read the game as an interpretation built around a real, sparsely documented person.
What does the game add beyond the historical record?
| Question | What the historical evidence supports | What the game presents |
|---|---|---|
| Who was Yasuke? | A real figure of African origin who served Nobunaga; the sources discussed by Lockley document him in Japan from 1579 to 1582. | A playable protagonist in a fictional story set in feudal Japan. |
| Was he a samurai? | The label remains debated; Lockley points to a 1582 diary mention as evidence indicating samurai status. | Ubisoft portrays him as a samurai. |
| What was his personality and fighting style? | Not established by the short documentary record described here. | Ubisoft gives him a combat-oriented gameplay role alongside Naoe’s stealth-oriented style. |
| What happened outside the documented years? | Not established by the cited record. | The game develops a dramatic narrative; its events should not be treated as corroboration of history. |
Is Assassin’s Creed Shadows still receiving story content?
Ubisoft’s June 16, 2026 update describes the free “Black Tides” release as the final major content drop and a story capper for Naoe and Yasuke’s adventure, with about two hours of content. That is a statement about the game’s release plan and story, not about Yasuke’s historical life. See Ubisoft’s update for the release details.
