Discovery announced on May 14, 2025, that its streaming service Max would return to the HBO Max name that summer. The company said the change was meant to put HBO’s reputation for distinctive, quality storytelling back at the center of the service’s identity. WBD’s official 2026 materials continue to call the service HBO Max.
Why is Max changing its name back to HBO Max?
WBD said HBO better communicates the service’s quality-oriented programming proposition. In its May 14, 2025 announcement, the company said its strategy was focusing on programming it believed worked best: HBO shows, recent theatrical films, docuseries, selected reality programming, and Max and local originals. That is the company’s stated rationale; the announcement does not show that the name change itself caused subscriber or financial growth.

WBD leaders framed the move as a return to a familiar signal of premium storytelling. The announcement did not say the service would become exclusively HBO programming: WBD described a slate that also included films and other programming beyond HBO.
When did Max become HBO Max again?
WBD announced the planned rebrand on May 14, 2025, and said it would happen that summer. The company had announced the Max service on April 12, 2023, ahead of its U.S. launch on May 23, 2023. WBD’s official pressroom and brand materials in 2026 use the HBO Max name.

How did the service’s name and positioning change?
| Brand era | Intended signal | Content positioning described by WBD |
|---|---|---|
| HBO Max before the 2023 change | HBO-led streaming brand | HBO programming and Warner Bros. films were part of the offering; WBD’s 2023 announcement characterized Max as a broader proposition. |
| Max, launched in the United States on May 23, 2023 | A broader service for a household, rather than an HBO-centered name | WBD said Max brought together HBO, Warner Bros., Max Originals, DC, Harry Potter, and programming from Discovery brands. |
| HBO Max, announced May 14, 2025 | A return to HBO in the service name and a clearer quality-oriented signal | WBD said its programming focus included HBO, recent theatrical films, docuseries, selected reality programming, and Max and local originals. |
The change is about branding. The announcement does not establish that the catalog, prices, plan features, or subscription terms changed because the service name changed.
