It was behind Tony Stark’s kidnapping in the first Iron Man film; in Shang-Chi, Xu Wenwu is revealed as the organization’s real leader—and Shang-Chi’s father.
How is Shang-Chi connected to Iron Man?
The Ten Rings are the link. In Iron Man, the organization’s Afghanistan operation captures Tony Stark. Years later in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings gives the group a fuller history through Wenwu, its long-lived leader and Shang-Chi’s father. D23 described the film’s subtitle as connecting the new hero’s story “back to the very beginning of the MCU” by opening up the question of who was really behind the Ten Rings.
This is a connection through the organization and its leadership, not a story in which Tony Stark appears in Shang-Chi or is shown meeting Wenwu. The theatrical film establishes the relationship between Wenwu and the Ten Rings; it does not make a direct personal order from Wenwu for Tony’s capture part of its on-screen plot.
Are the Ten Rings in Shang-Chi the same group from Iron Man?
Yes. The Ten Rings in Shang-Chi are the same organization introduced in connection with Tony Stark’s kidnapping in Iron Man. Shang-Chi expands the group’s story and identifies Wenwu as its real leader, making its history part of Shang-Chi’s family story as well as the MCU’s earlier history.

Was the Mandarin in Iron Man 3 really Shang-Chi’s father?
No. The man presented as the Mandarin in Iron Man 3 is Trevor Slattery, an actor hired to impersonate the Ten Rings leader. Slattery is not the organization’s actual head. Shang-Chi identifies Wenwu as the real leader and Shang-Chi’s father, clarifying the distinction between the staged public persona and the person behind the organization.
What does the deleted scene say about Tony Stark’s capture?
A November 2021 ComicBook.com report describes a deleted Shang-Chi scene in which Wenwu returns to the Ten Rings and refers to meeting Raza, the leader of its Afghanistan operation. The report connects Wenwu to the cell associated with Tony Stark’s capture, but says the scene does not establish that Wenwu personally ordered the attack.

That detail belongs to a reported deleted scene, not a plot point viewers need in order to understand the theatrical film. It supports a link between Wenwu and the organization’s Afghanistan operation, but it should not be inflated into proof that he directly commanded Tony’s kidnapping.
Why does the Ten Rings connection matter?
It turns an organization that first appeared as part of Tony Stark’s origin story into a link between separate corners of the MCU. In Shang-Chi, the Ten Rings are not merely a callback: they are central to Wenwu’s identity and to Shang-Chi’s family history. The Mandarin reveal also corrects the impression left by Iron Man 3: Slattery played a role, while Wenwu was the real leader.
