Marlena Shaw, the jazz and R&B vocalist whose 1969 recording of “California Soul” became a lasting soul classic, died on January 19, 2024, at 81. Her daughter, Marla Bradshaw, announced her death; the Associated Press reported that the family did not give a cause.
Who was Marlena Shaw?
Born Marlina Burgess in New Rochelle, New York, on September 22, 1942, Shaw grew into a vocalist whose work moved between jazz, soul, R&B and, later, disco-era music. Her uncle, trumpeter Jimmy Burgess, helped introduce her to jazz. She made her first appearance at Harlem’s Apollo Theater at age 10, according to The Guardian’s obituary.
Shaw studied music at New York State Teachers’ College, though she did not complete the course. After singing at Chicago’s Playboy Club, she signed with Chess Records in 1966. In 1968, she toured Europe with Count Basie’s orchestra—a formative jazz chapter before her best-known soul recordings.
How “California Soul” became her signature recording
Shaw recorded “California Soul” for her 1969 album The Spice of Life. The song was written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson; Ashford had released his own version in 1968. Shaw’s recording is often the one listeners encounter through later sampling and popular culture, but it is part of a wider album rather than her only defining work. The British Phonographic Industry awarded the recording an official gold certification in 2022, according to The Guardian.

The track’s afterlife stretched well beyond its original release. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2024 that WhoSampled listed 35 songs sampling “California Soul” at the time, including Gang Starr’s “Check the Technique,” Stereo MC’s “Sofisticated” and a Diplo remix. That is a dated tally from a third-party database, not a definitive or permanent count. The newspaper also noted use of the song in advertising for Dockers, KFC and Dodge Ram.
“Woman of the Ghetto” and the sampling legacy
Another essential track from The Spice of Life is “Woman of the Ghetto,” which Shaw co-authored. Its forceful perspective and distinctive performance made it an enduring part of her catalog and a major source for later artists drawing on her recordings.

In the same 2024 report, the Los Angeles Times said WhoSampled listed 54 songs borrowing from the live version of “Woman of the Ghetto” and 15 from the studio version. These figures describe the database’s tally as reported then; they should not be read as a current audited total. Sampling incorporates material from a recording, while a cover is a new performance of a song—two different ways Shaw’s music can continue to circulate.
A career beyond one song
Shaw’s recording and touring career extended across more than five decades. The Associated Press reported that she released 17 albums across eight labels, with recordings appearing on Cadet/Chess, Blue Note, Verve, Concord and Columbia, among others. The Guardian also associates her with “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” and “Go Away Little Boy.”

Her 1977 album Sweet Beginnings was her highest-charting U.S. album, peaking at No. 62, according to the Los Angeles Times. Her discography also includes her first two Chess/Cadet albums, including Out of Different Bags. Rather than fitting one genre or era, Shaw’s body of work reflects a career that moved among jazz performance, soul songwriting and later styles.
Shaw stopped professional activity in 2016 and retired to Las Vegas, The Guardian reported. Verve Records, whose label history intersected with her career, remembered her in a statement quoted by the AP: “We are saddened by the passing of Marlena Shaw, a wonderful singer whose ‘California Soul’ is as popular today as it ever was and whose album ‘It Is Love: Recorded Live At Vine St.’ helped relaunch the Verve label in 1987.”
