Alison Carey sued her younger sister, singer Mariah Carey, in New York in 2021, alleging that accounts in Mariah’s 2020 memoir caused her emotional distress and public humiliation. Alison sought at least $1.25 million. The allegations in the book and Alison’s objections were competing accounts, not findings established by a court.
What prompted Alison Carey’s lawsuit?
The dispute centered on The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah Carey’s memoir, co-written with Michaela Angela Davis and published in 2020 by Macmillan’s Andy Cohen Books imprint, according to a New York court decision in related litigation. The court decision

In her 2021 New York County lawsuit, Alison alleged that the memoir and its publicity caused emotional distress and public humiliation. She sought at least $1.25 million, a damages request reported at the time—not an award. The Guardian’s 2021 report
What did Mariah Carey write about her sister?
Contemporaneous reporting summarized passages in which Mariah’s memoir recounted that Alison had drugged her when she was a child, offered her cocaine, thrown hot tea that caused burns, and left her in a vulnerable situation with a boyfriend who allegedly tried to kiss her. Alison disputed the portrayal; her complaint described the allegations as “cruel and outrageous.” These are accounts attributed to the memoir and the complaint, not judicially established facts. What happened to Alison Carey’s lawsuit?
Mariah Carey announced in August 2024 that her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, had died on the same day. An Associated Press report carried by Arab Times said Alison was 63 and had been in hospice care. That announcement does not establish what happened procedurally to Alison’s lawsuit. The materials cited here do not establish whether the action was dismissed after Alison’s death, whether a representative asked to take her place in the case, or whether another procedural outcome occurred. Its final status should therefore be treated as unverified, rather than described as active or resolved. Case-status information

How is this different from Mariah Carey’s brother’s lawsuit?
Mariah’s brother, Morgan Carey, brought a separate lawsuit over the same memoir. New York court decisions in 2022 and 2024 concern Morgan’s case, not Alison’s. The 2022 decision dismissed claims against publisher-related defendants and dismissed much, but not all, of Morgan’s claims against Mariah; the 2024 decision denied summary judgment because factual issues remained. Those rulings do not determine the outcome of Alison’s action. 2022 decision 2024 decision
