Kensington Palace is a working royal residence, but there is no current official public map showing which royal household occupies each apartment. The Royal Household identifies four household groupings with London residences and offices at the palace; the available official information locates them at the palace as a whole, not in specific apartments.
Who lives at Kensington Palace?
The Royal Household’s residence page associates these households with offices and London residences at Kensington Palace:
- The Prince and Princess of Wales
- The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester
- The Duke and Duchess of Kent
- Prince and Princess Michael of Kent

What the public map can—and cannot—show
A reliable map can mark Kensington Palace and identify the royal households the Royal Household associates with it. It cannot responsibly label each household’s apartment: the official material does not provide a current apartment allocation. Treat any map that claims to show private residential layouts or precise current apartment assignments with caution.

Residence descriptions also do not mean that a person is physically at the palace at any particular time. An official residence is distinct from a private home or someone’s location on a given day.
Where the Prince and Princess of Wales are based
The Royal Household lists Kensington Palace as the Prince and Princess of Wales’s official residence. The Prince of Wales’s profile also says the family spends some time at its private residence on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. Apartment 1A: a dated detail, not a current map
A Royal Household announcement dated 20 January 2017 said that the couple—then styled the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge—had used Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace as their official residence when carrying out royal duties since 2014. At that time, the announcement described Norfolk as their primary family base and anticipated a greater London base from autumn 2017. This is historical evidence about their arrangements as reported in 2017, not confirmation of a present-day allocation or a map of the palace’s other apartments. Why Kensington Palace matters in royal history
From Nottingham House to a royal residence
William III bought the Jacobean mansion known as Nottingham House in 1689 and commissioned Christopher Wren to extend and improve it. Kensington Palace became a favourite residence of successive sovereigns until George II’s death in 1760. Historic Royal Palaces: Kensington Palace history.
