She also said she believed director Greta Gerwig should have been nominated.
What did Margot Robbie say about her Oscar snub?
At a SAG-AFTRA discussion during the 2024 nominations period, Robbie described herself as grateful rather than disappointed. BBC News quoted her saying, “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed.” The comment was reported by BBC News on 31 January 2024; it is a report of her panel remarks, not an official transcript.

Robbie connected that reaction to the film’s aims. “We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact,” she said, adding that the impact exceeded what the filmmakers had dreamed of and was “truly the biggest reward” they could receive. BBC News also quoted her saying, “Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director.”
Which Oscar nominations did Barbie receive?
Barbie received eight nominations at the 96th Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Robbie was not nominated for Best Actress, and Gerwig was not nominated for Best Director. Contemporary coverage described those omissions as snubs, but the Academy’s record is the clearest way to distinguish the categories the film entered from the two it did not.

| Recognition | 2024 outcome |
|---|---|
| Best Actress | Margot Robbie was not nominated, as reported by BBC News and ITV News. |
| Best Director | Greta Gerwig was not nominated, as reported by BBC News and ITV News. |
| Best Picture | Barbie was nominated; the Academy lists David Heyman, Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Robbie Brenner as its producers. |
| Total nominations | Eight, according to BBC News, ITV News, and ABC News Australia. |
The Academy’s official 2024 awards record confirms the Best Picture nomination and names Robbie among the film’s producer nominees. That distinction matters: she missed an individual acting nomination, while receiving Academy recognition as a producer of a Best Picture nominee.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did Robbie call the film’s impact the biggest reward?
Robbie framed the film’s cultural reach as more important to her than any one nomination. Her remarks did not dismiss the significance of awards; they explained why she could feel grateful despite the omissions. She pointed to the response to Barbie and the impact the team hoped to make, while explicitly supporting Gerwig’s work as director.

The reaction followed public debate about the nominations. The Associated Press reported on backlash to the omissions on 24 January 2024, including criticism from people associated with the film and public figures. That reaction helps explain the “snub” framing in headlines, but it does not change the official category record.
