Matt Bomer said outlets discussed his personal life before he had the chance to address it publicly, leaving him feeling that others had taken control of his story. Speaking with Jesse Tyler Ferguson on the Dinner’s on Me podcast, he described the experience as “kind of unfair.”

He said the delay was not because he did not want to speak publicly: “I didn’t even have an opportunity to.” Bomer framed the unfairness around who had the ability to shape the story. “No media outlet was ever going like, hey, I just didn’t have a career that warranted that,” he said. “And so it felt kind of unfair to me that that was stolen by people who did have a microphone at the time.”
That is Bomer’s description of his experience and his judgment about it. His comments do not establish that any particular outlet caused a specific career outcome.

How his 2012 speech fits into the account
