For a first viewing, watch the four Matrix films in release order: The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, then The Matrix Resurrections. Add The Animatrix after the first film if you want extra context; its short “Final Flight of the Osiris” is specifically described as a prelude to Reloaded.

Release order preserves the discoveries of the original film and follows the sequence in which the feature story was presented. A 2026 Movistar Plus explainer lists the four films in this sequence. A separate published chronology distinguishes fictional events from release dates, so a timeline of story events is not the same thing as the best first-watch order.

Where to add The Animatrix
For an expanded film-and-shorts watch, use this order:
- The Matrix (1999)
- The Animatrix (2003), as an anthology block
- The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
- The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
- The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
The Animatrix is an optional anthology, not a prerequisite for understanding the feature sequence. Warner Bros. Entertainment Italia describes its stories as events preceding The Matrix and identifies “Final Flight of the Osiris” as a prelude to The Matrix Reloaded and the game Enter the Matrix. If you prefer to separate the shorts rather than watch the anthology together, place “Final Flight of the Osiris” before Reloaded. The studio page does not establish an exact placement for every other short.

Release order and fictional chronology are different
The film release sequence is straightforward; the wider fictional timeline is less so. A published chronology covering films and games explicitly presents the order of events in the story rather than product release dates, but it does not settle a definitive placement for every Animatrix short. Movistar Plus describes Reloaded as taking place six months after the first film and Resurrections roughly twenty years after Revolutions; treat those as broad orientation from that publisher, not as a complete studio-certified timeline.
Enter the Matrix is a video game, not a film or short, so it does not belong in a movie-focused watch list. The published chronology includes the game among the 2003 stories, but does not prescribe a viewing experience. A cross-media sequence would need separate game-specific guidance.

How much extra time does the anthology add?
Warner Bros. lists The Animatrix at 100 minutes. That makes the expanded route four films plus an anthology, rather than just the four-feature sequence. The anthology gives additional story context, but the studio description does not make every short essential to following the films.

Warner Bros. Japan lists a Matrix trilogy 4K UHD and digital-remaster Blu-ray collection for that regional edition, with a November 17, 2021 release date and nine discs. It is identified as a trilogy set; that catalog entry does not establish that it includes The Animatrix or The Matrix Resurrections. Check the exact territory, format, language and included titles on a retail listing before buying. Streaming availability varies by country and changes over time; no current service catalog is established here.
