What Allen says happened that morning
In an account reported by PerthNow, Allen recalled that Lauren Zonfrillo called him at about 4:30am on April 30, 2023, and told him Jock had died. Zonfrillo had press commitments scheduled for that morning. Allen said he offered to attend in his place and went to the MasterChef season-launch press while knowing Zonfrillo had died.
Allen’s account, as reproduced by PerthNow, was that Lauren wanted to keep the death from the MasterChef team and did not want Network 10 informed yet. The report presents Allen’s recollection; the original podcast recording or a transcript was not independently verified.
Where Allen shared the account
PerthNow attributed Allen’s recollections to an interview on A Life of Greatness with Sarah Grynberg. The report says he explained that he agreed to take on the scheduled media commitments after Lauren called with the news.

Allen’s relationship with Zonfrillo and grieving
Allen described Zonfrillo as “the older brother I never had.” He also said he missed him every day and had learned a great deal from him about cooking and food.
Allen described the first six months of grieving as “such a journey” and said he sought talk therapy. PerthNow reported him saying grief was acceptable, while acknowledging that there were still very bad days as well as things to celebrate.
