Robert “Bob” Reynolds became the Sentry after consuming the Golden Sentry Serum. Marvel describes him as a hero with extraordinary strength, faster-than-light speed, a genius intellect, and the ability to manipulate molecules. The Void is his destructive dark counterpart, closely tied to his psyche—but Marvel has not confirmed exactly what the Void is or where it came from.
Who is the Sentry?
The Sentry is the superhero identity of Bob Reynolds, a human whose origin begins with an accidental break-in. Marvel says the young Reynolds entered a laboratory while seeking illicit substances and consumed the Golden Sentry Serum, a formula developed in a secret effort to improve on the super-soldier serum. The formula pushed his molecules slightly out of sync with reality and gave him extraordinary abilities, according to Marvel’s 2025 history of the character.
The character debuted in SENTRY (2000) #1 as a hero from the past whom the world had forgotten. That premise is central to his origin: the Sentry was not simply unknown to the public; his memories and evidence of his existence had been deliberately erased.
Why did the world forget the Sentry?
In the original story, the Void returns as Bob Reynolds regains his memories. To stop the threat, Reynolds works with Mister Fantastic and Doctor Strange to erase knowledge of the Sentry and his powers from the world. Marvel’s Sentry reading guide describes the result as a hero erased from people’s memories.

The memory erasure is revisited in later stories, with further returns and attempts to conceal the Sentry’s existence. It explains why the character’s history repeatedly turns on people remembering him, forgetting him, and confronting the danger connected to that knowledge.
What are the Sentry’s powers and abilities?
Marvel’s character history attributes four broad abilities to the Sentry after he takes the serum. These are descriptions from the comics publisher, not quantified limits or a consistent power scale.

Marvel offers possible explanations, including that the Void might be a cosmic entity bonded to the Sentry or the result of a psychic virus created by Mastermind. These remain possibilities rather than a settled account. The close relationship between Reynolds, the Sentry, and the Void is clear in Marvel’s descriptions; the Void’s precise nature is not.
How the Sentry’s story develops across major eras
The Sentry’s status changes over time, so his early origin, later Avengers stories, and more recent return should not be treated as one uninterrupted account.
