The firing became public on March 12—eight days before the series began streaming on March 20. Marvel cited the investigation’s findings but did not disclose their details in its public statement. DeMayo denied misconduct allegations, and the available public reporting does not establish what happened.
When was Beau DeMayo fired?
Marvel’s official project profile, published February 15, 2024, announced that X-Men ’97 would begin streaming March 20 and identified DeMayo as its head writer. TVLine also reported that DeMayo had completed his head-writing work for the first two seasons and had been expected at a premiere event. TheWrap reported that season-one work and season-two scripts were complete. Those reports describe his work before the firing; they do not establish whether every script remained unchanged in the released series.
What reason did Marvel give?
Marvel did not give a reason when news of DeMayo’s departure first emerged. In an August 16, 2024 report, the Los Angeles Times quoted a Marvel spokesperson saying: “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation.” The spokesperson added: “Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.” The statement described Marvel’s rationale but did not identify the findings in detail.

The Los Angeles Times reported that a source familiar with the termination described alleged sexual misconduct as part of the investigation. That account is an attributed description of allegations, not a publicly released investigation report or an adjudicated finding. The public reporting cited here does not independently resolve the claims.

Vanity Fair reported DeMayo’s denial: “These allegations of egregious misconduct are false.” DeMayo also made claims about his later season-two credit, which the Los Angeles Times summarized alongside Marvel’s response. Those claims and responses do not, by themselves, establish what the investigation found.

In March, Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation, Brad Winderbaum, said he could not discuss details. As TheWrap reported, he also praised DeMayo’s respect and passion for the characters and his scripts, saying the team drew inspiration from them while building the series. His public praise did not explain the termination.
