Martin Short opened Jimmy Kimmel Live’s summer guest-host run with jokes about Donald Trump’s possible running mates and the coming debate with President Joe Biden. The show’s June 24, 2024, video also captures Steve Martin interrupting Short’s monologue, then continues with Jiminy Glick interviewing Bill Hader.
What Martin Short said about Trump and Biden
The official Jimmy Kimmel Live video description says Short discussed Trump’s vice-presidential options and the debate with Biden scheduled for Thursday. The Guardian’s June 25 roundup adds that Short joked about Trump’s claim that Biden would use drugs for the debate. These were jokes and references to campaign rhetoric, not evidence that Biden used drugs or that Trump’s claim was true.
The segment aired amid late-night hosts’ summer breaks, as The Guardian noted. Short was filling in as guest host; the show described him as kicking off its summer guest-host run.
Steve Martin interrupts Short’s monologue
Steve Martin interrupts Short during the monologue. TV Insider’s June 25 account says Short sent him away before the interview segment, quipping: “It’s almost time for the interview, so you better go yell at the staff one more time… Walk toward the light, Steve!” That wording is attributed to TV Insider’s report.
