Task has a second season, but the best way forward is not to reopen its first case. HBO’s announced setup gives Mark Ruffalo’s Tom Brandis a new team, an operation with an increasingly elusive target, and a collision with Mahershala Ali’s Philadelphia DEA agent Eddie Barnes. Season 2 should use those changes to build a distinct crime story while carrying forward the character depth and regional detail that made the series its own.
What is confirmed about Task Season 2?
HBO renewed Task on November 20, 2025. The first season followed an FBI task force investigating violent robberies in Philadelphia’s working-class suburbs. The renewed series brings Ruffalo back as FBI agent Tom Brandis, now in command of a new team. HBO’s March 23, 2026 announcement says the operation grows harder to define the deeper the team gets into it. Mahershala Ali plays Eddie Barnes, a veteran and respected Philadelphia DEA agent whose team comes into conflict with Tom’s unit.
Season 2 was in production according to Warner Bros. Discovery’s September 11, 2026 update. That update does not state a premiere date. CBS Philadelphia reported on April 29, 2026 that filming was scheduled to begin July 6 in Philadelphia and surrounding suburbs, and that no release date had been announced at that time; that was the status as of the report, not a current release-date confirmation.
The September WBD update lists returning cast members Julianne Nicholson, Harry Melling, Adam Nagaitis, Aminah Nieves, Edgar Ramírez, Martha Plimpton, Silvia Dionicio, Tim Blake Nelson, Jharrel Jerome and Brían F. O’Byrne, alongside new cast members Rose Rollins and Carol Santiago. The cast list establishes who is involved, not what their characters will do.

Give Season 2 a genuinely different case engine
Season 1’s central engine was a specific investigation into violent robberies. The announced second-season setup instead revolves around an operation whose target becomes harder to identify. That is a useful point of departure, not yet a guarantee of a more satisfying mystery. The new case should develop its own stakes and logic rather than feel like a variation on the first season’s pursuit.
Creator and showrunner Brad Ingelsby told the Associated Press that Season 1’s story had “a clear end,” even though HBO initiated the idea of continuing. The wiser choice is to preserve Tom’s character continuity without mechanically reviving a closed crime plot. A new investigation should earn the audience’s investment on its own terms.

Make uncertainty fair, not merely obscure
The official premise promises that identifying the target will get harder. That can create compelling suspense if viewers receive clues that support more than one plausible interpretation and enough context to reason alongside the investigators. Withholding basic information just to prolong a reveal would make the case feel confusing rather than intricate. The story need not disclose its answer early; it should make the uncertainty legible as it evolves.
Make the new team matter beyond Tom
Tom is confirmed to lead a new team, which offers a natural way to change the series’ dynamics. The team should have distinct skills, loyalties and pressure points, so its members affect how the case is understood and pursued rather than serving only as extensions of Tom’s judgment. Shared responsibility can also make leadership consequential: a decision by Tom should have visible effects on colleagues who bring their own expertise and limits.

This is a creative recommendation, not an announced account of the team’s personalities or roles. The confirmed cast list does not establish who will be allies, antagonists or pivotal investigators. The series has room to make the group feel specific through what its members notice, disagree about and risk—not simply by adding names to the roster.
Turn the FBI–DEA clash into an intelligible dilemma
Eddie Barnes is confirmed as a respected Philadelphia DEA agent whose team conflicts with Tom’s unit. The source of that conflict has not been disclosed. The show will be stronger if the friction grows from a real institutional problem—such as competing responsibilities, different information or incompatible strategies—rather than hostility for its own sake.

A genuine dilemma gives both teams understandable reasons to act as they do, while forcing Tom and Barnes to reckon with the consequences of cooperation or division. That approach can make the conflict more than a procedural obstacle and keep the audience attentive to what each side knows and owes. These are possibilities for the writing, not confirmed plot details.

Ingelsby told the AP that Tom’s emotional journey came early in the writing process: “I think that stuff was some of the earliest we wrote. It was like, ‘OK, now, so that’s the emotional journey of the show and then we’ve got to figure out what the plot is.’” AP described Tom as a former priest and FBI agent navigating grief, faith and possible redemption after a family tragedy.

That character-first method gives Season 2 a strong foundation, but continuity should not mean another pass through the same emotional beats. The new investigation should put pressure on Tom’s beliefs and leadership through the choices he makes in this case. His history can inform those choices without predetermining them; the point is to let him develop, not simply to restate his earlier struggle.
Keep Philadelphia and its suburbs specific to the people who live there
Ingelsby has said that local accuracy matters because people from the region recognize what characters listen to, wear and drink. As he told the AP: “It’s important to me. I want to do right by them. Even if they don’t like the characters or the decisions of the characters, I want them to feel like we got the place right.” Season 2 should keep that attention to ordinary details as the cast and investigation widen.
Philadelphia-area production and local casting offer opportunities for that specificity, but location alone cannot provide it. Community characters should have agency and lives beyond their usefulness to the investigation; regional texture should emerge through how people live and relate to one another, not only through recognizable landmarks or accents. That care can preserve the show’s sense of place while making a larger ensemble feel rooted rather than decorative.
Keep tonal relief inside the drama
Ingelsby also told the AP that he wanted humor in Task and praised Martha Plimpton’s ability to find it. Season 2 should preserve character-based humor as a contrast to the crime story’s pressure, without using jokes to erase consequences or puncture every serious moment. Relief works best when it reveals how people cope with one another and with the work, not when it turns danger into a punchline.

The opportunity in Season 2
The announced premise already supplies the ingredients for a distinct season: a new operation, a new team under Tom and a conflict with Barnes’s DEA unit. The creative challenge is to make those elements work together—so the mystery is fair, the institutional divide has reasons behind it, and Tom’s personal development grows out of the case. If the show also keeps Ingelsby’s character-first approach and commitment to local detail, it can continue beyond Season 1 without losing what made Task recognizable.
