Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan met at Harvard, began dating while they were students, and married in May 2012 after about nine years together. Their later public story has included raising a family and co-leading the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), which they announced in 2015.
How Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan met
A 2010 New Yorker profile reported that Zuckerberg met Chan at a Friday-night party at Harvard fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi while he was a sophomore. They started talking while waiting in line for the bathroom. Chan later remembered his nerdy humor and a beer glass printed with a C++ reference. The profile does not give the date of the party, so the exact day they met is not established. Read the New Yorker profile.
When they started dating
The Harvard Crimson reported in May 2012 that the couple had dated for nine years before marrying. That places the start of their relationship approximately in 2003, but the reported duration is not an exact start date. The Harvard Crimson’s 2012 wedding report.
In a 2019 CBS interview, they recalled that their first date nearly did not lead to a second. Zuckerberg said he had a take-home midterm but would rather spend time with Chan. That is their later recollection of the date, not a contemporaneous record of when it happened. Read the CBS interview.
