Mark Snow, the composer whose eerie, instantly recognizable theme helped define The X-Files, died July 3, 2025, at age 78. The Washington Post reported that he died in Los Angeles and that his son-in-law identified a rare blood cancer as the cause. Snow’s work extended well beyond the series: he composed music for more than 200 episodes of The X-Files, as well as its spin-off films and numerous other television shows.
How Mark Snow died
The Washington Post reported that Snow died July 3, 2025, in Los Angeles, at 78. The newspaper said his son-in-law identified a rare blood cancer as the cause. The Television Academy and Variety also reported his death at 78.
Who composed The X-Files theme?
Mark Snow composed the theme and score for The X-Files. The Washington Post credited him with music for more than 200 episodes and the spin-off films. His theme’s spare, unsettling sound became closely associated with the series’ mysteries and atmosphere.
Snow studied composition and oboe at Juilliard. In a Television Academy oral-history interview, he discussed his relationship with composer Earle Hagen and described the X-Files theme as an homage to him. The Television Academy lists Snow as a 1996 nominee for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music for the series.

Why the theme became a hit
The theme’s success was unexpected: Variety reported that it became a chart hit. Snow reflected on the song’s unusual simplicity in a quotation published by Variety: “Nothing really big happens in the song. It stays in A-minor, there’s no singing, drums or guitars, and it was a smash hit. That’s pretty wild.”
Mark Snow’s work beyond The X-Files
Snow had a long television career beyond the series. The Television Academy’s retrospective identifies Hart to Hart, Smallville, and Blue Bloods among his credits—work that shows the range of his career across different eras and kinds of television storytelling.
