Ayesha Jalal’s The Pity of Partition uses Manto’s writing and personal papers to explore that human dimension. The title’s “107th birth anniversary” refers to 2019, calculated from the 1912 birth year Penguin Random House India gives for Manto; it is not a current anniversary in 2026.
Who was Saadat Hasan Manto?
Manto was born in Punjab in 1912 and died in Lahore in 1955. He worked as a short-story writer, journalist, radio writer and film-script writer. At the time of Partition in 1947, he was an established Urdu short-story writer and a rising screenwriter in Bombay, according to Princeton University Press’s description of Jalal’s book. Penguin Random House India says he moved to Lahore with his wife and three daughters after Partition.
His writing career began before Partition: Penguin describes his stories as dating from the mid-1930s onward, with many written under Partition’s shadow. That span matters to Jalal’s approach: Manto is not presented only as a witness to one historical rupture, but as a writer whose circumstances and work changed around it.
How does Jalal use Manto to explore Partition?
Princeton University Press describes The Pity of Partition: Manto’s Life, Times, and Work across the India-Pakistan Divide as a history of Partition viewed through Manto’s life and fiction. In the publisher’s account, his stories become a lens on Partition’s tragedy, while Jalal draws on stories, sketches, essays and private letters to assemble an intimate history of the event and its toll. The book’s method connects literary form and personal experience with the political division, rather than treating Manto’s fiction as a substitute for a broader history.
