Edge of Eternities is a 2025 Magic: The Gathering space-fantasy set built around the Sothera system, a new setting in Magic’s own fictional universe. Its story follows scrappers and rival factions pursuing a powerful relic; its mechanics evoke spacecraft, exploration and cosmic forces. It is not a crossover with a named science-fiction franchise.
What is the Edge of Eternities setting?
Wizards of the Coast places the Sothera system outside the Multiverse, bordering the Blind Eternities. The setting gives the cards a space-opera frame without leaving Magic’s fictional world. In the story, a scrapper crew finds a dangerous relic that might offer a way out of debt, drawing the attention of interstellar factions.
The design team drew on broad space-opera conventions—travel between planets, enormous spacecraft, unusual aliens, astronomical phenomena, powerful technology and immense scale—while choosing not to allude to particular popular space-opera franchises. Vision design lead Ethan Fleischer described the approach as: “So, we made a rule for ourselves: no allusions to popular space opera media.” Wizards’ design commentary explains how the team aimed to make the setting feel like space opera while keeping it distinct.
The location also provides a way to gesture toward the Blind Eternities without defining the whole concept. Mark Rosewater put it this way in the vision design handoff: “The Sothera system borders the Blind Eternities, letting us explore the Blind Eternities without defining it.”

How do the new mechanics work?
Four headline mechanics give the set its science-fiction feel: Station, Lander, Warp and Void. Their exact effects vary by card, so use the card’s text and Wizards’ official release notes for detailed timing and interactions.
- Station: Some spacecraft and planets gain charge counters when you tap a creature; the number of counters depends on that creature’s power. Each Station permanent uses its counters for its own effect.
- Lander: This artifact token can be sacrificed for two generic mana to find a basic land card and put it onto the battlefield tapped.
- Warp: You may cast a card with Warp from your hand for its Warp cost. If cast that way, it is exiled from the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step, and its rules allow it to be cast from exile on a future turn. Check the individual card and release notes for the precise conditions.
- Void: This is not one uniform effect. Void abilities differ from card to card, but they care about permanents leaving the battlefield or being warped during that player’s turn.
