How Madonna’s childhood shaped the family
Madonna’s mother died of breast cancer in December 1963, when Madonna was six. The children temporarily lived with relatives before reuniting after their father remarried and moving to Rochester Hills, Michigan, according to Fox News’ account.
In a May 1989 conversation with Becky Johnson for Interview, Madonna recalled that she resented losing her mother more than the responsibility of helping raise her siblings: “I didn’t resent having to raise my brothers and sisters as much as I resented the fact that I didn’t have my mother.” The transcript is reproduced by a Madonna fan-community site, rather than hosted in an original magazine archive.

Madonna also described feeling like an outsider as a child and said she did not feel close to anyone in the family then. She recalled becoming closer to her brothers in high school as she began dancing seriously. These are her memories of her own experience, not a statement of how each sibling viewed the family.

Martin
Martin is identified as one of Madonna’s older brothers in Fox News’ account. The sources cited here do not establish a detailed career or current-status profile, so more specific claims about him should be treated cautiously.
Anthony
Madonna’s older brother Anthony died in 2023 at age 66, the Associated Press reported, citing a family announcement by his brother-in-law, musician Joe Henry. In an Instagram remembrance quoted by AP, Henry described Anthony as “a complex character” and wrote that he loved and understood him, despite moments of conflict between them.
Paula
Paula, identified by Fox News as Paula Mae Ciccone, is Madonna’s younger sister. Although secondary accounts attribute film-industry and vineyard work to her, those details are not independently established by the stronger sources cited here.

Christopher
Christopher was an artist and designer as well as a professional collaborator during parts of Madonna’s career. AP reported that he worked as a dancer, art director for the Blond Ambition tour and tour director for The Girlie Show. He published the memoir Life with My Sister Madonna in 2008, offering his personal account of their relationship and family life.
Christopher died in Michigan in October 2024, aged 63. AP reported that his representative identified cancer as the cause. The siblings’ relationship was not constant: a 2009 Guardian interview described a period when they had not spoken properly after Christopher left Madonna’s professional team and published his memoir. Madonna later said they found their way back to one another when he became ill.

In a tribute reported by AP after his death, Madonna called Christopher “the closest human to me for so long” and reflected on how they had supported one another through a difficult childhood. His memoir is best read as a firsthand, subjective account, not as an independently reported biography.
Melanie
Melanie is Madonna’s younger sister and is married to musician Joe Henry. AP identifies Henry as Madonna’s brother-in-law in its reporting on Anthony’s death. Claims about Melanie’s private life or professional work beyond this are not established by the sources cited here.
