MadS is a French horror film designed to feel like one continuous, roughly 90-minute shot. Its story follows a young man whose plans for a night out collapse into an escalating outbreak nightmare—but the film deliberately leaves the cause of the violence uncertain. The camera’s unbroken-feeling movement, rather than a firm explanation, drives the ride.
What is MadS about?
Directed by David Moreau, MadS is a 2024 French horror feature starring Milton Riche, Laurie Pavy and Lucille Guillaume. Shudder’s synopsis introduces 18-year-old Romain, newly graduated and eager to go out. After trying a new pill at his dealer’s place, he encounters an injured woman on the way to a party. Her behavior turns violent, and what begins as an ordinary night spirals into a citywide crisis. Shudder’s film listing gives the runtime as 89 minutes and the rating as TV-MA.
The opening encounter makes clear that this is not a conventional outbreak story built around a prepared response or a clear chain of explanations. Romain stops to help the woman; at the car, she smashes her own head against the dashboard and bleeds out, according to IFC Center’s screening description. The film’s immediate concern is what the people caught up in the night see and do next.
Is MadS really one unedited shot?
It is best described as an apparent single take: the film is designed to play as one continuous shot, but that does not prove it contains no edits. In his review for Gizmodo/io9, Germain Lussier allows that hidden cuts may create the effect. The distinction matters: the experience is of continuous movement, not a verified claim about the absence of every edit.

The camera follows characters through apartments, roads, houses, cars, a party and city streets, shifting between movement on foot and by vehicle. Lussier writes, “From that point on, the camera in Mads is the main character.” That is his critical description of the film’s method, not a claim attributed to Moreau.
The technique gives the night momentum: instead of cutting away to explain events or reset the scene, the camera stays with people as one encounter leads into another. Lussier finds that approach tense and effective, while judging the film more invested in style and energy than in plot substance. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a measure of general audience opinion.

Is the threat a virus, zombies, or something else?
MadS does not clearly identify the outbreak’s cause or settle on a definitive explanation for what is happening. A virus, a zombie-like condition or something else remain possibilities, as Lussier notes in his review. Treat that uncertainty as a deliberate feature of the story, not a puzzle with an established answer outside the film.
Because the characters are trying to understand events as they unfold, the lack of a clear label keeps the audience close to their confusion. Viewers who want a defined mythology or detailed outbreak exposition may find that frustrating; viewers who prefer immediate suspense and uncertainty may find it effective.

How long is it, and what language is it in?
Listings differ by a minute, so “about 90 minutes” is the safest general description. Shudder lists 89 minutes; the Spanish ICAA registry also records 89 minutes; IFC Center’s 2024 screening listing gives 88 minutes. The discrepancy is unresolved in those records.
IFC Center lists the screening as French with English subtitles. That is a record for that screening, not a guarantee that every release or streaming listing has the same language and subtitle options. The ICAA registry records a Spanish classification of “not recommended for audiences under 18”; that is specific to Spain and should not be mistaken for a universal rating.

Where can you watch MadS?
Shudder lists MadS, making its title page the sensible place to check first. Availability can vary by country and change over time, so the listing alone does not guarantee that the film is currently playable in every territory. IFC Center’s page records a past screening and names Shudder as distributor; its DCP format refers to that theatrical screening, not a consumer disc edition.
The available records cited here do not establish a DVD or Blu-ray release. A screening format is not evidence of a home-video edition, so check current retailer or distributor listings if you are specifically looking for a physical copy.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
MadS is a stronger fit for viewers drawn to real-time tension, kinetic camera work and outbreak uncertainty than for those seeking a carefully explained mythology. Lussier compares it with Outbreak and 28 Days Later; those are useful points of reference for the outbreak-horror appeal, not claims that the films share the same story or style.
