Jemison became the first African American woman in space when she flew aboard the space shuttle Endeavour in September 1992. Eight months later, she appeared as Ensign Palmer in a 1993 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation—a fictional role that made her the first real-life astronaut to appear on Star Trek, according to NASA and a 2019 Congressional hearing biography.
Was Mae Jemison the first Black woman in space?
Yes. NASA identifies Jemison as the first African American woman in space. She reached orbit as a science mission specialist on the STS-47 mission aboard Endeavour in September 1992. “Black woman” is a common way to phrase the milestone; NASA’s wording is “first African American woman in space.”
Her path to the astronaut corps combined medicine and public service. NASA selected her as an astronaut candidate in 1987. Before that, she had worked as a general practitioner and as a Peace Corps medical officer in Sierra Leone and Liberia.
What did Mae Jemison do on the STS-47 mission?
STS-47, also called Spacelab-J, was a cooperative NASA and National Space Development Agency of Japan mission. The shuttle carried out research in microgravity, including investigations in materials and life sciences. NASA’s 2019 account says the mission included 44 life-science and materials-processing experiments, and that Jemison was a co-investigator on an experiment studying bone cells.

NASA reported that Jemison logged 190 hours, 30 minutes and 23 seconds in space on this flight. That figure is her total time for the STS-47 mission, not a measure of time spent on the television set or in her Star Trek role.
What episode of Star Trek was Mae Jemison in?
Jemison appeared in “Second Chances,” a 1993 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation directed by LeVar Burton. She played Ensign Palmer, a Starfleet officer. StarTrek.com places the guest appearance in the week of May 24, 1993; NASA’s history account describes it as occurring eight months after her spaceflight.

The two milestones are connected, but distinct: Jemison’s first was a real spaceflight, while her Star Trek appearance was a guest role on a television drama. NASA’s historical account and a 2019 Congressional hearing biography describe her as the first real-life or actual astronaut to appear on Star Trek.
Was Mae Jemison inspired by Uhura?
Jemison credited Nichelle Nichols, who played Lieutenant Uhura on the original Star Trek series, as an inspiration. NASA historian John Uri documented that connection. It is accurate to say Nichols helped inspire Jemison; the available account does not establish that she was the sole reason Jemison chose an astronaut career.

The link between science and science fiction also resonated with astronaut Victor J. Glover. In a NASA history article, John Uri quotes Glover saying, “Science and Star Trek go hand-in-hand.” Jemison, in a 2016 interview quoted by Smithsonian Magazine, put the value of the genre this way: “What really good science fiction does is to allow you to reflect on yourself, your values and your beliefs.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Mae Jemison’s two milestones belong together
Jemison’s appearance brought an actual astronaut into the fictional world of a show that had helped shape her imagination. She once recalled, “As a little girl growing up on the south side of Chicago in the ‘60s I always knew I was going to be in space,” in a 2013 lecture at Duke University, as quoted by Smithsonian Magazine. Her story joins scientific work, public service, representation, and popular culture without confusing the reality of her flight with the fiction of Starfleet.
