MadS is a formally ambitious French horror film that uses a one-shot presentation to make an escalating night feel immediate and difficult to escape. That technique gives the movie a strong claim to attention, but it is not proof that horror’s future belongs to single-take films.
What is MadS about?
Directed by David Moreau, MadS follows 18-year-old Romain just after graduation. He tries a new pill, then encounters an injured woman on his way to a party. The encounter pulls him into an increasingly terrifying night. Shudder lists the film at 89 minutes and TV-MA, with Milton Riche, Laurie Pavy and Lucille Guillaume in the cast. Shudder’s official listing provides the premise and film details.
The streaming release date recorded by Rotten Tomatoes is October 18, 2024. That is a release-history detail, not a measure of the film’s popularity or influence. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page lists the date and credits.
How does the one-shot presentation affect the film?
MadS is made to play as one continuous take: the camera moves through scenes without the ordinary visible breaks of conventional editing. AMC+ describes it as shot in a single take, while The Guardian notes that hidden joins make the apparent continuity possible. It is more accurate to call this a one-shot presentation than to claim the entire film was captured in a literally uninterrupted recording. AMC+’s listing describes the format; The Guardian’s review discusses the hidden joins.

The form’s clearest payoff is momentum. When the camera continues forward rather than cutting away, the viewer stays close to the characters and has little visual distance from the next disturbance. The Guardian reviewer argues that the technique strengthens tension and praises Philip Lozano’s fluid camerawork for preserving a scrappy immediacy. Those are critical judgments, but they point to the right test for the format: does each movement sustain suspense, or does the long flow make the pacing feel constrained?
That same test applies to visual variety. A continuous-looking camera must keep scenes legible and give movement a purpose; otherwise, the formal feat can become the main event. The technique creates a distinct viewing experience, but the available critical account does not establish that it improves every part of the story.
Is MadS the future of horror?
Not on the evidence available. MadS demonstrates that a one-shot approach can serve an outbreak-adjacent horror story by intensifying continuity and immediacy. It does not establish that the technique is new, broadly influential or destined to define the genre. The stronger case is narrower: it is an ambitious use of form that can make familiar horror dynamics feel more immediate.
The one-shot device is not a substitute for compelling characters, a persuasive escalation or a satisfying ending. Viewers deciding whether the film works for them should consider both sides: the camera’s sustained movement may heighten tension, while its constraints may make the pacing or visual approach feel limiting. The format is a reason to watch, not by itself a verdict on the whole film.
