Lester Holt’s final broadcast as anchor of NBC Nightly News aired Friday, May 30, 2025. In his closing remarks, he thanked viewers, said he would miss their evenings together, and told them: “Around here, facts matter, words matter, journalism matters, and you matter.” Holt was leaving the anchor chair after 10 years, not NBC; he continued as a full-time anchor of Dateline NBC. Tom Llamas took over Nightly News on June 2.
What Holt said in his final sign-off
Holt thanked viewers for trusting him and described the years they had spent together through difficult events, including the pandemic, mass shootings and natural disasters. He said he would miss sharing their evenings and asked viewers to keep taking care of themselves and one another.
The concise line that captured his closing was: “Around here, facts matter, words matter, journalism matters, and you matter.” The words were delivered by Holt during the May 30 broadcast, as reported by Deadline in a report republished by Yahoo.
What viewers saw during the farewell
Contemporary coverage described Holt as visibly emotional during the closing. Staff members joined him, and a montage revisited moments from his tenure. That on-air description is about what viewers saw, rather than a claim about Holt’s private feelings. NBC News published a commemorative video of the farewell; TVLine also covered the closing.

Why Holt left the anchor chair
In a note published by NBC on February 24, 2025, Holt said he would step away from Nightly News after 10 years as its anchor. He planned to continue at NBC and anchor Dateline NBC full time. He said he would remain on Nightly News through around the start of summer, setting up the May 30 farewell. The announcement described his future with NBC as continuing “for years to come.” Read Holt’s note to NBC colleagues.
