Ledisi performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing” during the Super Bowl LIX pregame at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025. The NFL’s official video identifies Otis Jones as the American Sign Language (ASL) translator for the performance.
What Ledisi performed at Super Bowl LIX
Ledisi sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing” as part of the pregame program before Super Bowl LIX. The NFL’s official performance video documents her performance with ASL translator Otis Jones. The NFL had announced Jones IV for the role ahead of the event; the video identifies him as Otis Jones.
The Associated Press reported that Ledisi was backed by a choir of local high-school students. The performance took place at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025.
Why the hymn mattered in 2025
“Lift Every Voice and Sing” was first sung by schoolchildren on February 12, 1900, according to the James Weldon Johnson Foundation. The foundation described the 2025 Super Bowl performance as taking place in the hymn’s 125th anniversary year, connecting its origins in a children’s chorus with the high-school choir accompanying Ledisi.

The song has deep cultural significance in Black cultural and civil-rights history. It is often called the Black national anthem, but it is not the national anthem of the United States.
How it fit into the New Orleans pregame
The NFL presented the broader 2025 pregame lineup as a celebration of New Orleans and Louisiana’s musical heritage. NFL head of music Seth Dudowsky said, “We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state.” Ledisi’s performance was one part of that Louisiana-centered program.

“Lift Every Voice and Sing” at the Super Bowl
The Recording Academy says the song had appeared in the Super Bowl pre-show since 2021. Its account names earlier performers and dates, but the presentations have not all used the same staging, so that history does not imply a single standard format.
For listeners who want to revisit Ledisi’s rendition, Spotify lists “Lift Every Voice and Sing – Live” by Ledisi and NFL on Super Bowl LIX Live From New Orleans, LA (2025), with a listed runtime of 2:24. That listing verifies a digital track, not a physical release.
