Marvel’s 2024 Godzilla announcement offered Avengers fans a striking cover, not a Godzilla story. The actual showdown arrived later: Marvel’s catalog lists Godzilla vs. Avengers (2025) #1, published June 18, 2025, as part of a six-issue sequence of one-shot battles.
Why the 2024 Avengers cover prompted the complaint
On June 24, 2024, Marvel announced 21 Godzilla variant covers for selected comics, including Avengers #18, illustrated by Ario Anindito. The covers put Marvel heroes alongside the King of the Monsters, but they did not change the stories inside those issues. James Whitbrook’s June 25, 2024, io9 headline, “Let the Avengers Fight Godzilla, Cowards,” captured the obvious distinction: a cover tease is not a crossover plot.
In Avengers #18, the story concerns a threat from Hyperion, not a battle with Godzilla. The 2024 cover is therefore a collectible piece of art, rather than evidence that the Avengers fought the kaiju in that issue.
Marvel later published the actual crossover
Marvel’s catalog records Godzilla vs. Avengers (2025) #1 as published on June 18, 2025. It is the fifth of six one-shot showdowns in the sequence. Marvel’s synopsis names Godzilla, Fin Fang Foom, the Avengers, and Jet Jaguar—making this the release that fulfills the original headline’s premise in story form.
#1 Best Overall
- A PREVIEWS Exclusive
- Faithfully recreating every aspect of Shimo's appearance from the film
- Figure features multiple joints throughout the body
- Measures about 6.6” tall
- Each scale is lovingly crafted with multiple layers of paint
The timeline matters: the 2024 announcement was for variant covers; the Avengers-and-Godzilla story is a separate 2025 comic. If you are looking for the actual crossover, start with the 2025 issue, and check the edition and availability with a retailer before ordering.
Which comic to look for
| What you want | Release | What it contains |
|---|---|---|
| Godzilla cover art on an Avengers comic | Avengers #18 Godzilla variant, announced in 2024 | Ario Anindito’s Godzilla-themed cover; the issue’s story is about Hyperion. |
| The Avengers in a Godzilla story | Godzilla vs. Avengers (2025) #1, published June 18, 2025 | A one-shot in Marvel’s six-part sequence; its catalog synopsis names Godzilla, Fin Fang Foom, the Avengers, and Jet Jaguar. |
| Marvel’s earlier Godzilla comics | Godzilla: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus, announced in 2023 | Marvel said the omnibus collects the original 24-issue 1970s series; it is background reading, not the 2025 crossover. |
How the joke aged
As a reaction to the June 2024 cover reveal, the complaint was fair: the Avengers cover teased a matchup that its issue did not deliver. But it no longer describes the full publication history. Marvel subsequently put the Avengers and Godzilla together in an actual crossover comic, while keeping the earlier variant-cover promotion and the later story distinct.
