Landman Season 1, Episode 7, “All Roads Lead To A Hole,” puts two kinds of story in the same frame: Tommy’s escalating cartel problem and Angela and Ainsley getting to know their community. The episode’s central tension is whether its family and community material makes Tommy’s danger feel more consequential—or diverts attention from the conflict with the strongest dramatic pull.
What Episode 7 sets up
Paramount+’s official U.S. synopsis describes the split directly: “Tommy’s cartel problem continues to escalate. Meanwhile, Angela and Ainsley get to know their community.” That juxtaposition makes the episode’s structural question clear: do the personal and community threads deepen the pressure around the cartel and oilfield story, or do they pull the hour away from it?

Do the side stories strengthen the main conflict?
Character and community can add stakes
A story about the people around Tommy can make his central conflict matter more than its immediate danger. Family and community threads can show what is at risk beyond the next cartel-related turn, and their contrast with the oilfield pressure can give the episode a wider sense of life in this West Texas setting. On that reading, the shifts are not distractions by definition: they broaden the human context around the danger.

The cost of leaving the pressure behind
But a subplot has to earn its share of the episode. If it does not change how Tommy’s problem develops, sharpen its consequences, or alter the audience’s understanding of the people caught around it, time spent away from that conflict can feel like delay. The official synopsis establishes the competing threads, but not how every scene connects them. The fairest criticism is therefore about the episode’s balance, rather than claiming that a particular scene is irrelevant.
Why the tonal shifts divide viewers
The episode’s central balancing act is between high-stakes danger and the humor or warmth available in family and community material. That contrast can make the danger feel more disruptive by setting it against ordinary social life. It can also weaken momentum if the shift arrives without building pressure on the main conflict.

Two published reviews emphasize opposite sides of that balance. Sean Tajipour of Tell-Tale TV rated the episode 3/5, writing, “There are some funny and heartfelt moments, but the pacing feels off, and a bit of filler doesn’t add much.” Carissa Pavlica of TV Fanatic rated it 3.75/5 and praised its “humor, heart, and high-stakes drama.” These are individual critical responses, not a representative measure of audience opinion. A release-day discussion thread included viewers calling the ancillary plots “filler,” with one reaction describing the episode as a “complete waste of time.” Those comments illustrate the pacing complaint, but an informal thread cannot establish how viewers generally felt. Verdict: an argument about focus, not just plot
Episode 7’s premise gives the side stories a plausible purpose: to place Tommy’s escalating problem alongside the family and community it threatens to overshadow. Whether that purpose lands depends on how well the shifts keep the central pressure alive. The divided critical response captures the trade-off: viewers who value texture, humor, and heart may welcome the broader canvas, while those looking for sustained cartel and oilfield momentum may find the competing threads dilute the hour.
