Landman Season 1, Episode 8 ends with an unidentified “bogeys” report during a National Guard training exercise. The scene connects Tommy’s plan to the cartel trouble affecting the oil patch, but it does not confirm who the targets are or whether they were hit. Calling it a confirmed attack on cartel personnel goes beyond what the episode shows.
What happens at the end of “Clumsy, This Life”?
Tommy has suggested involving the Texas National Guard after cartel intimidation, road blockages, and stolen equipment begin affecting drilling operations. He makes a distinction: he is asking Monty to have the Guard train, not asking him to deploy them.

In the final sequence, an exercise is underway in a target zone. After explosions, the pilot reports, “Base, I think we have bogeys in the TZ,” then asks, “Did they take hits?” The episode cuts off without a clear answer. The scene establishes a target-zone encounter and an unresolved question about hits—not a confirmed strike on a named group or asset. The dialogue details come from a third-party transcript, not an official screenplay. Episode transcript
Who or what are the “bogeys”?
In the scene, “bogeys” is the pilot’s term for unidentified contacts or targets in the zone. The dialogue does not identify them as cartel members, drones, or anything else, nor does it state their affiliation. The episode’s official synopsis supports the broader link between Tommy and the National Guard, but it does not explain the targets’ identity. Paramount+ episode listing

So the most careful reading is that the ending connects the training plan with the cartel-threat storyline while leaving the immediate situation ambiguous. The cartel is relevant context, not proof that the bogeys are cartel personnel.
Did the National Guard hit the cartel?
The episode does not confirm that. The pilot asks whether the bogeys took hits, but no clear response or identification follows before the cut. Viewers can infer that the encounter may relate to the cartel problem Tommy raised; they cannot treat a cartel strike or its result as an established plot fact.

| What the episode establishes | What remains unconfirmed |
|---|---|
| Tommy proposes National Guard training in response to problems affecting oil operations. | That the Guard was asked to deploy against the cartel. |
| An exercise takes place in a target zone, where the pilot reports unidentified “bogeys.” | Who or what the bogeys are, or which side they belong to. |
| The pilot asks whether the bogeys took hits. | Whether they were hit and, if so, what happened to them. |
Why the ending is a cliffhanger
The final exchange links Tommy’s response to the oil-patch threat with a potentially consequential encounter, then withholds the details that would settle its meaning. Episode 9’s official synopsis moves to a health scare, Monty, and Cooper’s plan; it does not clarify the bogeys’ identity or fate. Paramount+ episode listing
