In a January 12, 2025 exclusive with People, Randolph said, “I think being comfortable in your sexuality is something to be celebrated.” Her comments addressed criticism of a fictional character—not a statement of Randolph’s own beliefs or behavior.
What did Michelle Randolph say about the backlash to Ainsley?
Randolph’s response held two ideas together: she wanted viewers to recognize Ainsley’s confidence without treating the character as fully formed. People’s January 12, 2025 exclusive, syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment, reported Randolph’s defense of sexual comfort and her acknowledgment that Ainsley is 17 and still figuring out her boundaries. That distinction matters. Randolph was discussing how to understand a young fictional character, not asking viewers to approve every choice Ainsley makes. The available coverage does not establish how widespread any particular reaction was, so the backlash is best described as criticism reported in coverage rather than a measured consensus among viewers.
Why did viewers criticize Ainsley?
Us Weekly’s January 2, 2026 retrospective points to early scenes in which Ainsley talks frankly about sex with her father and behaves provocatively around the family home. Those moments drew attention to how the show presented her confidence and conduct. The subject of the debate was Ainsley’s scripted behavior, not Michelle Randolph’s private life. #1 Best Overall
Randolph said she tried to find a fuller, more human version of Ainsley, rather than letting the character’s most provocative scenes define her. She also described the challenge of inhabiting Ainsley’s perspective: after spending time in a character’s head, an actor can understand the logic behind choices that might initially invite a defensive reaction. Her goal, as described in the coverage, was to give Ainsley sincerity and redeeming qualities as well as flaws.
How Randolph later described Ainsley’s growth
In a 2026 conversation with Demi Moore for Interview Magazine, Randolph reflected on how different Ainsley is from her. She said, “For Ainsley, I couldn’t be more different than her, but I also adore her.” She characterized Ainsley as a young person with limited experience rather than as unintelligent: “I like to say she’s not dumb, she just has limited life experience, and we’re seeing her in her most formative years.”
Randolph also spoke about her own response to criticism: “I’ve had to stop letting myself get defensive over my character because when you spend so much time in someone else’s head space, you start to understand their logic.” These were later reflections, not remarks from the January 2025 People exclusive. A December 22, 2024 TV Insider interview offers context beyond the scenes that prompted criticism. Randolph described Ainsley as wanting to know her father and feeling safe around him, even when she pushed back against his protectiveness. That family connection helps explain why Randolph saw a person with emotional ties and needs—not just a collection of provocative moments. Read Randolph’s TV Insider interview.

Taken together, Randolph’s comments frame Ainsley as a character whose confidence can be celebrated while her youth and limited experience remain part of the story. That is her interpretation of the role; viewers may still disagree with the writing or with how the show presents Ainsley’s choices.
