Malice is a 1993 mystery-crime thriller directed by Harold Becker. It follows a suburban Boston couple caught between a college-town rape investigation and a medical crisis after a surgeon moves into their home. Alec Baldwin, Nicole Kidman, and Bill Pullman lead the cast. The film is built around late reversals, so this overview keeps its plot spoiler-light.
What is Malice about?
Andy Safian (Bill Pullman), a college dean, and his wife Tracy (Nicole Kidman) live in a Victorian house in suburban Boston. When Jed Hill (Alec Baldwin), an assured surgeon Andy knew at school, rents part of their home, their lives become entangled with a campus serial-rape investigation. An emergency operation on Tracy brings a medical crisis into the story and changes the couple’s circumstances.
The film combines domestic suspense, crime investigation, and medical drama. Its promotional premise is best left at that: the story relies on major reversals that are more effective unspoiled.

Release, runtime, and title
The American Film Institute records the film’s U.S. theatrical release as October 1, 1993. It is rated R and runs 107 minutes. The title began as Damages; AFI says it was changed to avoid confusion with the 1992 French film Damage.
How the film was made
AFI’s production history says Jonas McCord’s story entered development at Castle Rock under the working title Damages. Aaron Sorkin wrote drafts, Scott Frank contributed to the screenplay’s thriller structure, and Harold Becker joined as director and producer. Production began October 3, 1992, with filming in Massachusetts and at Culver City studios.

Becker later sought a third act because the earlier ending left Andy simply a victim of his wife’s deception, according to AFI’s account. That development helps explain why the finished film moves beyond its initial domestic and investigative setup into further turns.
Critical reception: suspense and familiar turns
Contemporary critic Peter Rainer’s October 1, 1993 Los Angeles Times review praised the taut direction and dark visual style, while faulting the film’s loose ends and recycled thriller devices. He wrote: “It’s supposed to scare the wits out of you but the plethora of prior associations make it seem more like Old Home Week.”
