The band announced his death on November 18, 2017, saying he had been living with dementia for several years and died peacefully with his family at his bedside. His tightly driven guitar parts and riffs helped define AC/DC’s sound.
What AC/DC said about Malcolm Young’s death
In its official announcement, AC/DC described Young as a songwriter, guitarist, performer, producer and visionary. The unsigned statement said: “It is with deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of Malcolm Young, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother.” It added that he “had been suffering from Dementia for several years and passed away peacefully with his family by his bedside.” The band’s statement is the basis for the reported illness history and circumstances of his death; it did not identify a more specific medical cause.
Who Malcolm Young was in AC/DC
Young was a co-founder of AC/DC and the band’s rhythm guitarist. The Guardian’s obituary described his riffs and rhythm playing as central to the group’s sound. That role was distinct from simply supplying accompaniment: the guitar parts helped give the songs their driving pulse and recognizable framework, with the band’s forceful rock arrangements built around them.
The Guardian cited “Back in Black,” “Highway to Hell” and “You Shook Me All Night Long” among AC/DC’s best-known songs. They are examples of the band’s catalogue, not a definitive ranking. The Guardian’s obituary offers further career context and describes Young’s contribution to the group.

Why his songwriting and playing mattered
AC/DC’s official statement credited Young as a songwriter as well as a guitarist and performer. The Guardian’s account emphasizes how his rhythm work and riffs served as a foundation for the band’s sound. Together, those descriptions point to a contribution that was both musical and structural: the guitar parts were not merely background texture but a central part of how AC/DC’s songs moved and landed.
For a direct musical entry point, “Back in Black” is one of the relevant album references in accounts of AC/DC and Young’s legacy. The Guardian discusses the album alongside the band’s best-known work. Read the obituary’s discussion of Young and AC/DC’s music.
