Puerto Rico’s festival calendar runs throughout the year, but January is its standout season: Three Kings Day is celebrated on January 6, and the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián—SanSe—usually bring Old San Juan’s holiday season to a close later that month. The calendar also includes Ponce’s pre-Lenten carnival, agricultural celebrations, arts gatherings, and local events across the island. Dates and logistics vary by town and year, so confirm plans with event organizers.

Puerto Rico’s festival calendar at a glance

Religious and family traditions sit alongside town festivals celebrating music, agriculture, art, and heritage. The events below are a representative selection, not a complete inventory of Puerto Rico’s patron-saint festivals or local celebrations.

Date or season Event and location What it celebrates
December 28 Festival de Máscaras de Hatillo, Hatillo A Día de los Santos Inocentes parade with elaborate costumes and papier-mâché masks, floats, local music, artisans, and traditional food.
December 31 Víspera de Año Nuevo, island-wide New Year’s Eve gatherings, which may include midnight fireworks and customs such as eating twelve grapes. These are traditions, not universal requirements.
January 5–6 Three Kings Eve and Día de Reyes, island-wide Epiphany celebrations, family customs, and community events. January 6 is the holiday itself.
Usually the third weekend of January Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián (SanSe), Old San Juan A major street festival featuring music, dancing, artisans, parades, and street performances.
Third weekend of January Festival de la Novilla, San Sebastián A celebration of agricultural life, rural heritage, local food, and music, led by a flower-crowned heifer.
Late February Festival del Frío, Adjuntas A mountain-town festival with artisans, rides, games, food, live music, and a trovadores competition.
February or March, before Ash Wednesday Carnaval Ponceño, Ponce A weeklong pre-Lenten carnival known for parades, music, costumes, and vejigantes.
May or November; host city varies La Campechada A rotating arts and culture gathering that honors a different Puerto Rican artist each year, with activities that may include exhibits, performances, workshops, fairs, and guided walks.

The tourism calendar describes festivals and community events throughout the year. For events with annually announced schedules, confirm dates, programs, routes, and visitor arrangements with the town or organizer.

When is Three Kings Day celebrated in Puerto Rico?

Día de Reyes, or Three Kings Day, is January 6, the date of Epiphany. Customs often begin the evening before, when children place grass in a shoebox for the Reyes Magos’ horses. Families may mark the holiday with gifts, food, music, and community celebrations. Discover Puerto Rico’s Three Kings Day guide says Juana Díaz’s celebration has run for more than 130 years.

What happens on Three Kings Day?

In Juana Díaz, the January 6 celebration features the Kings arriving on horseback, a procession, food, artisans, music, and other activities. Towns around the island hold their own events, so Juana Díaz is a well-known destination, not the only place to celebrate. Holiday foods may include pernil, arroz con gandules, pasteles, tembleque, arroz con dulce, and coquito.

What should visitors check before attending?

  • Confirm the current schedule and event location with the municipality or organizer; times vary by town and year.
  • Check parade routes, parking, road closures, and museum hours before traveling.
  • Allow time for local event traffic and follow any access or safety guidance announced for that edition.

What is the biggest festival in Puerto Rico?

Discover Puerto Rico describes SanSe as Puerto Rico’s largest street festival. Held in Old San Juan, it usually takes place around the third weekend of January and features music, dancing, artisans, street performances, and the Comparsa de los Cabezudos. It is also widely treated as the close of the island’s Christmas season.

SanSe’s dates and operating details are edition-specific. For the 2026 edition, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company reported that the government and San Juan were coordinating event operations. Its account described family programming called Mini SanSe at Paseo de la Princesa and an artisan fair at Cuartel de Ballajá involving 200 artisans and 70 visual artists. Those numbers describe the 2026 program, not a recurring annual total. See the Tourism Company’s January 10, 2026 SanSe update for that edition’s coordination and programming.

How the major festivals differ

  • Religious and family traditions: Three Kings Day has a fixed date, January 6, while local celebrations vary.
  • Street festival: SanSe fills Old San Juan with performances and artisan activity on dates announced for each edition.
  • Pre-Lenten carnival: Carnaval Ponceño takes place in February or March, leading up to the day before Ash Wednesday. Its vejigantes wear distinctive long-snouted masks and costumes.
  • Agricultural and regional celebrations: The Festival de la Novilla in San Sebastián and Festival del Frío in Adjuntas reflect local settings and traditions.
  • Arts and culture: La Campechada honors a different Puerto Rican artist each year and moves between host cities.

Are festivals the same as official public holidays?

No. A cultural celebration or town festival is not, by itself, proof that government offices, schools, or businesses close. The Government of Puerto Rico’s 2026 proclamation calendar labels dates by categories such as law, tradition, petition, and law with a permanent date, and says the calendar is subject to change. The Department of Education’s 2026–2027 holiday page is a school calendar. Neither is a complete statutory list of public holidays or a guarantee of closures at every institution. For employment or closure questions, check the applicable law, current executive orders, and the specific agency or employer.

When is the best time of year to experience festivals in Puerto Rico?

January is the strongest choice if you want a concentration of major celebrations: Three Kings Day falls on the sixth, followed by SanSe and San Sebastián’s Festival de la Novilla, usually around the third weekend. Visitors interested in carnival traditions can consider February or March for Carnaval Ponceño; late February brings the Festival del Frío in Adjuntas. La Campechada may be held in May or November, with its host city and schedule changing. Because annual dates and programs are not fixed across these events, check the current calendar before booking around a festival.
