The report relayed friends’ account that Day discussed the split at an after-party; it did not reproduce a joint statement from the couple. Day had denied separation rumours the previous month, according to the same article.
What PerthNow reported in March 2012
PerthNow’s 13 March 2012 story said Day and Maddox had separated. It reported that friends said Day spoke about the breakup at an after-party following the WA Fashion Awards. The headline described the couple as having confirmed the separation, but the article’s account, as reported, was not a direct joint announcement from both spouses. PerthNow’s report
The story also said Day denied pending-separation rumours when approached the previous month. It quoted him saying, “This isn’t true. Thanks for checking for me”. The later account of the separation therefore came after an earlier denial, rather than being a statement that the couple had jointly issued at the time.

- March 2012: PerthNow reported the separation and attributed the account of Day discussing it to friends.
- 2014: The West Australian covered differing public accounts of the breakup’s cause.

What was said about the reason
The reason for the separation was not established by the reporting cited here. In 2014, Maddox said lack of intimacy was not why she left. The West Australian reproduced a Facebook post in which she wrote: “Despite the actions of my ex-husband both privately and publicly over the past year or so since I separated from him, I have tried my hardest not to comment publicly on the reasons why I chose to leave”.

Day was also quoted as saying lost passion was one reason for the breakup. Those are attributed accounts from the former couple, and they differ; neither establishes a definitive private cause. The West Australian’s 2014 report

In June 2016, PerthNow reported that Maddox became sole owner of The Court Hotel following a settlement with Day. The newspaper characterized the settlement as worth more than $10 million; that figure is its report, not an independently verified valuation in the cited coverage.
