His wife, Vidya Kirtishahi, said her parents had warned the couple they would have their “Sairat.” The accounts published by Scroll on July 28 and 29 reported allegations and police statements; they do not establish a court finding on the attack or its motive.
What was reported about the attack
Scroll’s July 28, 2024 report, attributing its account to The Indian Express, said Salunkhe was attacked with sharp instruments on July 14 and died in hospital eleven days later. It identified his father-in-law and his wife’s brother as alleged attackers. The July 29 follow-up used different wording, referring to the wife’s father and cousin. The reports therefore differ in how they describe the alleged second attacker.
The reports identified Salunkhe as Dalit and Kirtishahi’s family as belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community. These details form part of the case’s reported context; the available accounts do not establish a judicial finding about motive.
What Kirtishahi said about the marriage and ‘Sairat’ warning
According to Scroll’s July 28 report, Kirtishahi told police that her parents had opposed the marriage and warned that they would do their “Sairat.” She said they had wanted to marry her to someone else, but that she and Salunkhe married with mutual consent and according to their religious customs. Scroll attributed her account to The Indian Express.

The reference was to the 2016 Marathi film Sairat, which Scroll described as a story about an inter-caste romance ending in the couple’s deaths at the hands of members of the woman’s family. The film comparison is part of Kirtishahi’s reported account of the warning; it is not, by itself, evidence establishing why the later attack occurred.
