Its subject gives the film serious stakes, but the drama does not consistently make those stakes feel immediate. The result is a respectable but overextended watch: more compelling as a story about power, reform and journalism than as a tightly shaped courtroom film. Junaid Khan’s debut is a reason for curiosity, not by itself a reason to overlook the film’s uneven execution.
Is Maharaj on Netflix?
Yes, Netflix has a title listing for Maharaj, but practical availability varies by country. Netflix’s India listing classifies it as a Hindi-language period and social-issue drama and says it can be downloaded for offline viewing; Netflix also has a US title page. Catalog access, ratings, audio and subtitle options can differ by territory and change over time, so check your local Netflix catalog.
The release-date announcements differed: Netflix said on May 29, 2024 that the film would premiere June 14, while Yash Raj Films lists June 21, 2024 as its release date. Netflix framed the release as bringing Mulji’s story to audiences “After 162 years”; that is the company’s promotional calculation from the 1862 case to the 2024 release, not an independently measured statistic. (Netflix, May 29, 2024; Yash Raj Films)
What is the film about?
Directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra, Maharaj follows journalist and social reformer Karsandas Mulji and draws on the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case, heard in Bombay’s Supreme Court. Netflix and Yash Raj Films describe the film as based on the case. Scroll calls it a fictionalisation, and the Kathmandu Post likewise places the story in the case’s historical setting. The safest description is a dramatization built around a real legal dispute—not a scene-by-scene record of the proceedings.

That distinction matters. The case offers a strong frame for questions about institutional power, faith, journalism, reform and women’s position, but entertainment coverage alone does not establish every plot event, character detail or line of dialogue as historical fact. Nor should the conduct of an individual character be treated as a summary of a complex religious tradition.
Does the drama earn its subject?
A weighty premise, uneven momentum
The central conflict gives the film a clear reason to exist: Mulji’s challenge to powerful authority has consequences beyond a private feud. Yet the screenplay’s buildup and courtroom payoff do not always feel proportionate. The story spends time establishing the scale of the conflict, then leans on explanation where character and dramatic tension could do more work. That imbalance is the main reason the film can feel like a slog, even when the underlying history remains intriguing.

Performances and period atmosphere
Junaid Khan makes his acting debut as Mulji. His restrained, old-fashioned manner may suit the period setting, but the role’s measured quality can also leave the film short of the force its conflict needs. Jaideep Ahlawat supplies a more commanding presence, helping give the opposition dramatic weight. Shalini Pandey is also in the principal cast, with Sharvari appearing in a special role.
The period setting gives the story a sense of scale, but atmosphere cannot resolve the screenplay’s uneven balance between dramatization and exposition. When the film lets the conflict carry the argument, its historical frame is compelling; when it spells out its social point, it feels less like a drama and more like a lesson being delivered.

What did critics think?
There is no single critical consensus. Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express rated the film 2 out of 5 and called both the film and Khan’s debut “strictly passable.” The Week took a more favorable view, praising the film’s “delicious, subversive politics” and Khan’s “old-world charm.” Rishika Dhakal of the Kathmandu Post found it compelling when approached as historical drama, while Scroll criticized its period-film execution and described it as a fictionalisation of the case.
Those differences reflect the film’s split appeal: its political and historical premise can hold attention even for viewers who find its dramatic construction less persuasive.

Should you watch it?
Watch Maharaj if the 1862 case, social reform and the collision between journalism and authority interest you, and you are willing to accept a dramatized account with an uneven pace. Skip it if you want a brisk courtroom story or a definitive historical reconstruction. It is not a disaster, but its subject is more absorbing than its execution: a royal slog in stretches, with enough substance to make the journey worthwhile for historically curious viewers.
