Maggie Smith’s career moved from classical theatre and award-winning films to the global audiences of Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. This chronological selection follows more than six decades of work and public appearances, from a 1957 photograph at her Belsize Park home to Wimbledon in 2023. It is a selection, not a complete visual record.

1950s: early life and first screen work

At home in Belsize Park, 1957

An RTÉ gallery begins with a photograph of Smith at her Belsize Park home in 1957. The domestic setting offers a glimpse of her life before the celebrated screen roles that would later define her for many viewers. RTÉ’s photo gallery identifies the image and places it at the start of a broader career timeline.

Nowhere To Go, 1958

The next early-career image is from Nowhere To Go, Smith’s film work at the end of the 1950s. Seen beside the home photograph, it marks the transition from private life to a profession that would take her across stage, film, and television for more than sixty years, according to the Television Academy biography.

1960s: classical theatre and the Old Vic

Desdemona in Othello, 1964

Smith played Desdemona opposite Laurence Olivier in Othello in 1964. The National Portrait Gallery records the production and pairing, an important marker of her classical stage career. The National Portrait Gallery’s biography and collection record also documents the later roles that brought her to much wider screen audiences.

Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, 1965

In a 1965 Old Vic image, Smith appears as Beatrice in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. The role shows her in a different classical register from Desdemona: witty, forceful, and central to a comedy rather than a tragedy. The photograph is one of the theatre moments included in RTÉ’s chronology.

At the Old Vic, 1967

An RTÉ image of Smith in her Old Vic dressing room in 1967 moves the view from performance to backstage. Alongside the production photographs, it makes visible the theatre work that ran through her career even as film recognition grew.

The Associated Press identifies Smith’s performance in the 1969 film as her Oscar-winning role; the AP obituary also traces her later place in popular culture.

The 1970 Tony Awards

The RTÉ sequence includes Smith at the 1970 Tony Awards, a snapshot of recognition on the theatre side of her work. The Television Academy lists two Academy Awards, three Emmy Awards, and one Tony Award among her honors. The Lady in the Van, 2015

RTÉ’s photo selection includes The Lady in the Van; the British Film Institute also documents Smith at the film’s 2015 premiere. The BFI’s remembrance provides that premiere context, complementing the gallery’s role-based images.

2017–2023: public appearances in her later years

A charity event, 2017

The RTÉ gallery includes Smith at a 2017 charity event, a public appearance beyond the performances and premieres that dominate career retrospectives. It adds a later-life moment to a sequence otherwise organized largely around roles.

Wimbledon, 2023

The timeline reaches a 2023 appearance at Wimbledon, the latest image in RTÉ’s sequence. Smith died aged 89 on 27 September 2024, as reported by the AP. Looking across these photographs, her own concise description of her working life still fits: “One went to school, one wanted to act, one started to act, one’s still acting.”
